Introducing The Yamaha YAS-203 Sound Bar/Wireless Subwoofer System

There seems to no end to the number of new  Soundbars. Yamaha has announced another addition to its large group of offerings,  the YAS-203.

Physical Design/Speaker Complement

The YAS-203 is 34 7/8-inches wide, which makes it a good physical match for TVs front 32 to 46-inch screen sizes, and houses two compact 2-1/8 inch full range speakers for mid-rand and high frequencies, as well as an additional, included, 6-1/2-inch wireless powered subwoofer.

The inclusion of the wireless subwoofer is very practical in that it enables placement anywhere in a room where you can get the best bass performance, with the need to connect a long cable. However, the subwoofer must be within reasonable distance from an AC outlet in order to provide power to its built-in amplifier.

Frequency Response

The frequency response for the sound bar portion of the system is stated as 150Hz to 22kHz, with the wireless subwoofer extending down to 35Hz (and up to a cut-off/ideal crossover point of 150 Hz).

Audio Decoding and Processing

The YAS-203 provides both Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround Audio decoding (many sound bars do not include DTS decoding capability). Audio performance is further supported by Yamaha's Air Surround Xtreme audio processing. Air Surround Xtreme is a Virtual Surround processing technology that delivers a wider, more immersive, sound field that does not depend on wall reflections, providing more flexibility when used in rooms with one or more open sides.

Additional audio processing options include Clear Voice (which is designed to add more presence for dialog), and UniVolume, which dampens loud volume peaks, such as commercials.

Physical Connectivity

Physical connections provided include one digital optical, one digital coaxial, and a set of analog stereo inputs.

The YAS-203 does not include HDMI inputs/output, and does not pass-through video signals. In other words, if you have sources, such as DVD or Blu-ray Disc player, you would make one connection to your TV for the video signal and another appropriate connection to the YAS-203 for the audio signal.

On the other hand, the YAS-203 incorporates Bluetooth for direct wireless music streaming from compatible portable devices, such as many smartphones and tablets.

Control Options

The YAS-203 can be controlled via provided, onboard front panel controls, very compact wireless remote, or via Yamaha's iOS and Android Remote Controller App.
