In 2014, Yamaha introduced its first under-TV sound system, the SRT-1000, which incorporated its unique Digital Sound Projection technology. Now, for 2015, Yamaha has added a second under-TV audio system option, the SRT-700 TV Speaker Base, that utilizes Yamaha's Air Surround Xtreme virtual surround technology.

Air Surround Xtreme Basics

The SRT-700 is designed to give the listener the impression of being in the middle of a "virtual" 5.1 or 7.1 channel sound field, without all of the normally required speakers. Although not providing as much pin-point accuracy as Digital Sound Projection, or a discrete 5.1 or 7.1 channel speaker setup, considering all of the sound is coming out two speakers in one box, the result can be quite effective, and definitely expands the audio soundfield for TV viewing in lieu of a more complex audio setup. For more details on how Air Surround Xtreme works, watch a video explanation.

Additional Audio Decoding and Processing

In addition to Air Surround Xtreme, the SRT-700 also provides Dolby Digital audio decoding - However, DTS decoding is not provided. If you have a DTS-only source, you will have to set the source output to PCM if connected to the SRT-700 using a digital optical connection.

You can also select a straight two-channel listening mode on the SRT-700 if you desire.

Additional listening enhancement options include Bass Extension (increases bass volume level in relation to the mid-range and high frequencies), Clear Voice (enhances vocals and dialog), and Audio Delay (lip-synch if your displayed TV images don't match up with the sound from the SRT-700 properly).

Speakers and Connectivity

For speakers, the SRT-700 includes two front-facing 1-1/2 x 3-7/8 inch full range drivers, complemented by two 3-3/4-inch down downfiring subwoofers and two-rear mounted ports.

In terms of source connectivity, the SRT-700 provides 1 digital optical, 1 digital coaxial and 1 analog stereo (3.5mm) input, as well as incorporating wireless Bluetooth for direct wireless streaming of music from compatible portable devices. However, it is important to note that there is no output provided for the connection of an added external subwoofer. Also, there is no HDMI pass-through connection option.

Control Options

The SRT-700 can be operated either by the included remote control, or using compatible smart phones and tablets after you have downloaded the free Yamaha Remote Controller App for iOS or Android. The SRT-700 also provides a learning option for many TV and Universal remote controls.

More Info

The SRT-700 can accommodate TVs up to 42-inches in size (or, in some cases with a video projector), provided the TV's own built-in stand, or video projector, can fit within the SRT-700's to surface, which is 30-3/4 x 14-5/8-inches - the unit is 3-inches high.

The Yamaha SRT-700 has a suggested price of $349.95.
