History buffs routinely cite World War 2 as a fascinating, albeit tragic, subject of study. If you're among them, World War 2 flight simulators are a great way to learn more about the period and get a chance to fight for your country in the virtual realm. Developers have put great amounts of time, effort and research into these games to make them as realistic as possible. These WW2 flight simulators put you and your plane at the heart of the battles fought in the skies.

The "IL-2 Sturmovik" series has some truly engaging features, such as an excellent mission builder, multiplayer features (up to 32 players in dogfight mode), and stunning graphics. With dozens of flyable and target planes, the combat takes place in the air, as well as from the air to the ground. First released in 2001, this is the oldest currently maintained flight simulation video game available.

The most recent additions to the series are "IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover" (2011), "IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad" (2013), and "IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey" (2009; console adaptation).

Despite its age—it was released in 2000—"Combat Flight Simulator 2: Pacific Theater" remains a favorite among historical flight simulator fans who love vintage games. In a twist on the usual at the time, you choose whether to fly American or Japanese planes, and everything's rendered in detail that's stunning for early 2000s games. Not only is this another great flight simulator for newbies, but it also has lots of missions and training to keep the seasoned gamer busy.

"Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle For Europe" (2009) is another in Microsoft's popular series. You can fly any of 18 new planes for the USAAF, RAF, or the Luftwaffe on single missions with friends over a LAN or the Internet. Your successes and failures directly affect the outcome of the war, but you can't do anything that's historically impossible.

"Jane's WWII Fighters" (1998) is a beautiful flight simulator for Microsoft Windows that allows you to fly a variety of planes in World War 2's Battle of the Bulge. Training missions for all levels of players make the game a good choice for those new to the flight sim genre. Another great perk is the multiplayer feature, which allows you to play up to eight people on a LAN or the internet.
