World of Warcraft Offers 100% Experience to Home-Bound Players

If we're not working, we’re killing COVID-19-stay-at-home-time on WoW

Why This Matters:

As more and more people are asked to stay home, World of Warcraft’s millions of online players are likely returning to the game in droves. Now they have good reason to stick around. Blizzard’s decision might be a good model for other game companies during the COVID-19 crisis.

World of Warcraft developer Blizzard announced on Friday that players can instantly gain 100% experience points from now until April 20.

Please unpack this: World of Warcraft is an online role-playing game with almost 6 million players who spend most of their time in the fictional world of Azeroth. The game is sometimes referred to as ”WoW.”

It‘s about the real world. In a post on the World of Warcraft site, Blizzard Entertainment doesn't explicitly reference the COVID-19 pandemic, but does say, ”If you’re staying inside or returning to Azeroth... you’ll be getting a special bonus to help you on your way.”

How does this work? All players in the Battle of Azeroth will automatically collect something called a “Winds of Wisdom” experience. This increases experience gains by 100%. The points, which apply to both WoW’s Starter and Legion Editions could help players instantly advance to the next level of the game or, perhaps, perform better in combat. Blizzard did not announce any discounts for the $14.99 a month gaming platform

Bottom Line: World of Warcraft is one of the most popular and best-known online games and this move may spur others to offer ”Stay at Home” perks, upgrades, and discounts.
