The Nintendo 3DS XL doesn't simply play cartridge games. When connected to the internet, it can access the Nintendo eShop to download games and apps, take part in online multiplayer games, and even browse the web. But first, you need to find and connect to a WiFi network. Here's how.

How to Connect the Nintendo 3DS XL to a WiFi Network

If you want to play online or download titles from the eShop, you first need to connect your 3DS XL to a WiFi network.

  1. From the HOME menu, tap System Settings. (It's the one shaped like a wrench.)

  2. Choose Internet Settings > Connection Settings > New Connection.

You can set up a maximum of three internet connections on the Nintendo 3DS XL.

  3. Choose Manual Setup. Alternatively, you can select Tutorial if you want to watch a demonstration on setting up WiFi.

  4. Tap Search for an Access Point to locate your WiFi network.

  5. Find the name for your wireless network on the list and then tap it.

  6. If asked, enter your wireless network's password.

  7. Tap OK to save the connection settings.

  8. Choose OK once more to perform a connection test. If everything's fine, you'll receive a prompt letting you know that your Nintendo 3DS XL is connected to WiFi.

From this point forward, as long as your 3DS' WiFi is turned on and you're within range of an approved access point, the 3DS will connect to the network automatically.

Tips

If you don't see your WiFi network while trying to connect, make sure the router is close enough to deliver a strong signal. If moving closer doesn't help, unplug your router or modem from the wall, wait 30 seconds, then reattach the cable and wait for the device to fully power back on. (Don't attempt this if it's not your router.)

Don't know the router's password? You might need to change the password if you've forgotten it or reset the router back to factory default settings so you can access it with the default password.
