Which Stats Should You Keep Track Of in Pokemon Go?

What do Attack, Stamina and Defense really mean?

There's a lot more to Pokemon Go than meets the eye, but a huge part of the game revolves around battling. While there's still a lot for people to get to know about the game and its more delicate systems, there's also a lot that we're discovering that we all need to know right now, including how to win battles and the special stats that go with doing so. Battling is an integral part of the game, and with our help you'll be on your way to capturing gyms and holding them all on your very own soon!

What are the Pokemon Go battle stats I should be aware of?

Great question! Aside from the CP (combat points) you have with each of your Pokemon, there are also a string of stats you should concern yourself with throughout the game: Attack, Stamina, and Defense. There isn't a lot said about any one of these stats as you play through the game, but they're extremely important. Combat Points and move sets are important parts of each battle of course, but that's not all there is to concern yourself with.

If you decide to give a Pokemon special items to power up its CP, its attack, defense and stamina is going to stay the same across the same Pokemon species. If you have a Meowth and it's your favorite you're going to see these stats remain the same. For this reason, you'll want to consider a Pokemon's Base Attack, which basically determines what kind of damage your monster is going to do when it finally heads into battle. Base defense stats are meant to determine the kind of damage your Pokemon will take when it finally takes damage from an opposing team.

Lastly, Stamina is a stat that Pokemon must use to perform any "special move" that you can tell from looking at the blue bar beneath your Pokemon's health bar. The higher it goes, the more your Pokemon can power up for battle. Higher stats mean Pokemon power up in a much speedier and much more efficient manner, so this is something you'll definitely want to keep an eye on. But you don't have to worry about these stats per Pokemon, and instead you should check them per species. Every Pidgey you get from the beginning of the game on out will have the same kind of stats, so throwing upgrades their way won't really mean anything at all. In essence, you may already have been wasting your time -- but the game definitely doesn't explain this.

So what does this mean for me?

All the boosting you've been doing with higher CP and whatnot isn't exactly how you think it's been working. It's important to make sure you keep abreast of these trends when they come out, especially if you're not sure how to approach battles. Previously they were (seemingly) a simple affair, but even now new information is trickling out slowly but surely. You'll want to keep a wide variety of Pokemon available, especially since the stats remain the same over the species rather than the singular Pokemon.
