WhatsApp Introduces Better Quality Media on iOS

The latest app beta on iOS adds a quality setting for photos

WhatsApp is bringing its quality setting to iOS devices to the latest beta version of the messaging app.

The details of the latest WhatsApp beta on iOS were originally picked up by WABetaInfo after the release of beta version 2.21.150.11. According to 9To5Mac, the beta introduces the quality settings that WhatsApp previously started testing on Android in early July.

The new setting, which allows users to change between Auto, Best Quality, and Data Saver, will give users more control over how the app compresses any photos or media that they send. WABetaInfo notes that while the setting offers “Best Quality” it doesn’t appear to send the photo in its original quality. Instead, it will use a lighter compression rate. This should lead to the final image being around 80 percent of the original quality, and images larger than 2048 x 2048 may be resized.

This is just one of many new features WhatsApp is testing. Previously, it introduced secure cloud backups to the Android version of its messaging app. While those backups were disabled shortly after, it stands as a good example of the steps WhatsApp is taking to offer new features to its userbase. The messaging giant is also testing multi-device sync support, another feature that the community has been asking for.

It's unclear when the quality options will make the jump to the stable release of WhatsApp. For now, users with the app on TestFlight can take advantage of the latest version and start sending media in higher quality.
