Buddy Chat is Now Group Chat in AIM

AOL Instant Messenger
AOL Instant Messenger offers the ability to chat with your buddies in groups. AOL

Buddy Chat was once a feature of AOL Instant Messenger which allowed users to chat with more than one user in either a pre-existing or user-created chatroom. Over time, the term "Buddy Chat" has been phased out in lieu of the more modern and popular term, Group Chat, which refers to the functionality that allows you to chat with more than one person at a time.

Group Chat is available within AOL Instant Messenger, and can be used on an iPhone, iPad or Android mobile device, via the web client, or by using the Mac or PC desktop client.

Here we'll give you the run down on how to start chatting with you buddies in a group using AOL Instant Messenger on a mobile device.

How to Group Chat using AOL Instant Messenger on a Mobile Device

  • Download the latest AOL IM application for your iPhone, iPad or Android device
  • Open the application and log in
  • Make sure the people that you want to chat with are listed in your contacts in the application. Tap on "Friends" on the bottom menu and then Contacts to see a list of your contacts. Tap the "+" sign at the top and follow the prompts to add more contacts.
  • Tap the "New Chat" icon on the bottom menu
  • On the next screen, tap into the field which says "Enter a name, or +1 and mobile number to SMS."
  • Enter the name of one of the people whom you would like to chat with. Provided they are in your contact list, their name will appear and you can click on it to enter it. A "+" sign along with the text "Add another contact" will then appear next to the name of your first friend. Enter the name of the next friend that you would like to invite to the chat.
  • Once at least two names are entered, a new field will appear that says "Name his group chat!" In this area, you have the option to name your Group Chat with something that would be a handy reference, such as "Friends from School," "Co-Workers," or "Bowling Team," for instance. Enter the name of your Group Chat, and then tap the "Start" icon at the top of the screen.
  • An invitation will be sent to your friends inviting them to chat. Once you are ready to start sending messages, you can tap into the field at the bottom of the screen and start typing. You can also tap on the paper clip icon for more options, including the ability to send a photo, draft a voice message, and send your location.
  • Tip: If you're using the web client or a desktop version of AIM, starting a group chat is even easier. Simply pull up the application in your browser, or open the app, click on "Chat with Friends" on the left side, and tap the icon of a person with a plus side located on the upper right side of the screen to add friends.

AIM provides a great way to chat in groups with your buddies, for free. Enjoy your chat!
