Users who wanted to send MailMe messages with an email client used the MobileMe Mail SMTP server settings to make it work. The mac.com domain predated the July 2008 relaunch of Apple's web services as MobileMe by several years. All services were transitioned and replaced by iCloud as of June 30, 2012.
