22 Websites for Free Stock Photos

A list of the best free stock photo websites

Free stock photos are more readily available than you might think. It really is possible to find thousands of free images that you can use and modify however you like.

You'll find free stock photos on just about any subject including people, transportation, concepts, nature, food and drinks, business, inspiration, education, technology, animals, travel and dozens of other categories.

Each free stock photo website works a little bit differently so be sure to check out any usage rights before downloading and using an image. Some of the images can be used commercially, others are to be used only for personal use. There are also various restrictions on if you can modify images, how you can modify them, and if you need to credit the copyright holder.

If you find an image on one of these free stock photo websites that you are able to modify, you can use a free online photo editor or a free photo editing app to do so. You can also quickly resize an image with a free photo resizer.

You can check the usage rights next to each photo before you download them. The screen size and file size are also available on each download page.

Some of the image categories include Business, People, Signs, Transportation, Concepts, and Architecture. You can also perform an advanced manual search for images and filter just for non-restricted images added before and/or after a particular date with a certain resolution.

Note: When you browse for photos, the small selection near the top are ones you must pay for, but everything else is free to download.

Magdeleine is an awesome free stock image website because of the unique ways you can filter the photos, unfortunately, there isn't a huge variety of images to choose from.

Pictures can be filtered to show only if they are in the public domain or require attribution, as well as if they have a particular color as the dominant color. You can also search for photos or browse them by category, like Objects or Technology, or by popular tag, such as #Landscapes or #Mountains.

Every day, a brand new, free picture appears on Magdeleine, as well as a "Photo of the Day" on the homepage.

Around 50,000 free photos are available at Stockvault.net, but they're free for personal use only, which means you can't use them on a company website, for example. See their FAQ page for more information.

There are categories you can browse through, a search box, and some filtered sections that show the newest, most viewed, most downloaded, and most loved pictures.

You can also subscribe to their email service to get weekly notifications of new images.

Over 15,000 free stock photos can be found at FreeStockPhotos.biz, and in many different categories. Some pictures are kept in sections like Events, Computers, Animals, People, Symbols, Religion, and Travel.

Over a dozen license types are available so you can filter the images by ones like Public Domain or Commercial Only. The items can then be sorted by most popular, newest/oldest, most/least downloaded, and most/least viewed.

Different images at FreeStockPhotos.biz can be used for different purposes, so if you're not filtering the results by usage type, take note as to what license is linked from each image's download page.

Note: Some images are sponsored by Shutterstock and may not be free to use. They're listed as "Sponsored Image From Shutterstock" and are displayed alongside the free photos from FreeStockPhotos.biz.

Picography screenshot

Picography is a very simple website that lets you scroll through tons of free, high-resolution photos that you can use for any purpose. Unfortunately, unlike similar websites, you can't browse for pictures by category or tag, or even search for them.

Images are opened directly without downloading them so you can view the whole photo in your browser, as well as share it over social media sites, before you take it. To download, you must simply right-click the full-sized photo and save it to your computer

You can also subscribe to monthly email updates.

FreePhotosBank is another source for free stock photos. You can browse by image categories and view a Hot List of popular images.

The Advanced Search section makes it easy to find stock photos from a past date, sorted by title/rating/views/etc., and in categories such as Computer and Technology, Architecture, Nature, Abstract, Objects, and Life.

FreeDigitalPhotos.net screenshot

FreeDigitalPhotos.net is a bit more restricted than most of these other sites that offer free stock photos, though there are plenty of pictures available. Some of them are in categories like Holidays and Events, Travel, Backgrounds, People, and Science and Technology.

You're required to provide a credit to the creator of the image you use, and you can only download a small sized version of the images. To obtain a larger image or avoid giving attributions, you must purchase the photos from FreeDigitalPhotos.net.

In addition to the above, you have to fill out a security challenge before downloading any picture.
