With tens of millions of Amazon Prime users in the U.S. and hit shows like "Vikings," "Mr. Robot," and "Veep" to enjoy, many Apple TV owners are eager to access Amazon’s Prime Video services using their device of choice.

Amazon has made Prime Video instant video apps available not only for iPhone and iPad but also for Apple TV, making it simple to watch Amazon's content on your television. All you need to do to get it is install the Amazon Prime Video app, either directly on your Apple TV or on your iOS device.

Before You Get Started

Amazon Prime Videos are only accessible if you have an Amazon Prime subscription. While Amazon users can enjoy some free shows without needing a subscription, much of what you'll find on Prime Video does in fact require a paid subscription.

It's also important that you have a third-generation or later Apple TV device. Anything older than that, even if you have a valid Amazon Prime account, will not support Prime Video.

If you get free, two-day shipping as part of your Prime membership but cannot access Prime Video, it's because the account holder hasn't given you permission. If you're part of a family in which one person pays for Amazon Prime and includes you as part of the deal, the Prime account holder has to share the Prime benefits with you before you can take advantage of Prime videos. When two people become part of an Amazon Household, and therefore share payment methods, they can both use Prime Video.

The easiest way to watch Amazon Prime videos on your Apple TV is to download the app directly to your Apple TV.

  1. Turn on your Apple TV and go to the main menu.

When you want to play your movies on the Apple TV, use the AirPlay feature on your iOS device to direct the videos to the Apple TV.

  1. Ensure your iOS device is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Apple TV.

  2. Launch the Prime Video app and log in to your account on your mobile device.

  3. Choose the movie you want to watch and press Play on the app.

  4. Tap once on the playing video and then you will see the AirPlay icon in the upper right corner.

Swipe upward from the bottom of your iPad screen in earlier versions of iOS (or down from the top right corner in iOS 11 and later) to display the Control Center.

  5. Tap the AirPlay button, which resembles an upward-pointing triangle with a rectangle that looks like a television.
