If you are an Amazon Video using Apple TV owner and also use an iPhone, iPad, Mac or iPod touch, then this short report will get you watching all the TV shows and movies you want using the Apple solution you choose in almost no time at all.

Amazon has made Prime Instant Video apps available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, but it has not yet introduced the app for Apple TV, so how do we watch those videos using an Apple TV?

That's right, among the 5,000+ Apple TV apps you won't find one that lets you watch a video using your Amazon Prime/Video account -- that's a shame, but here's how to get around the restriction.

What you need

All you need an iOS device, or a Mac, an Amazon Prime account, an iOS app and an Apple TV.

The Good, The Bad, The Easy

While it is easy to watch Amazon’s content on Apple TV it isn’t entirely straightforward making the process an annoying slice of unnecessary friction that reflects the rivalry between the two firms rather than any customer-focused mission.

It’s all about the business rivalry: Amazon wants to sell get its customers hooked on the Fire TV, while Apple believes the future of television is apps.

This aspect of the competition between the two firms is a pity for customers as with around 54 million Prime users in the US and hit shows like Vikings to enjoy there must be many thousands of Apple TV owners who would love to access Amazon’s services using their device of choice.

Using An iOS Device

If you are using an iOS device (iPhone, iPad or an iPod touch) then the first step is to download and install Amazon’s Prime Instant Video app. Available for free on the App Store, the app lets you explore the company’s complete collection of available titles, with many made available at no charge to Prime subscribers.

Once you sign in with your Amazon ID you will be able to browse, watch and rent your way through the available catalog using your iPhone or iPad, of course, but if you want to watch them through your Apple TV, you’ll need to use AirPlay.

Full instructions for using AirPlay with Apple TV are available here, but in brief, you should follow these steps.

  • Ensure your iOS device is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Apple TV.
  • Launch the Prime Instant Video app and log in
  • Choose the movie you want to watch and press Play on the app
  • Swipe upwards from the bottom of your iOSdisplay to access Control Center
  • Look for the AirPlay button (an upward pointing triangle with a rectangle above it looks like a television). Tap the button.
  • Choose the Apple TV you want to stream the movie too and tap its name in the dialog box.
  • The movie or TV show should now be playing on your Apple TV.

Using a Mac

You can also stream Amazon video from your Mac so long as it is running Mac OS X 10.11 or later. If it is you should select the movie or TV show you want to watch on the Amazon website using your Web browser on your computer before following these steps:

  • When the movie begins to tap the AirPlay button at the top right of your Mac Menu bar (to the left of the volume icon) and select the Apple TV you wish to stream the content through to.
  • Your Mac desktop should appear on your TV screen.
  • Now tap the ‘Full Screen’ button you can see in the window in which your Amazon media is playing. That full-screen image should also be visible on your TV screen, thanks to Apple TV.

Final Words

In most cases, you can use these steps to watch the Amazon-supplied streaming video using a third-generation (2012) Apple TV. Come back soon for some great ideas for how to get good use out of older models of the box.
