One of the most common issues seen when working with a Microsoft Windows based virtual private network is VPN error 619 - "A connection to the remote computer could not be established." With some older VPN servers, the error message says "The port was disconnected." instead.

What Causes VPN Error 619

This issue occurs either when trying to establish a new connection to a VPN server or when suddenly disconnected from an active VPN session.

The Windows VPN client will begin the connection process, then typically pause at the "Verifying user name and password" step for several seconds before the 619 message appears.

Different types of VPN clients may experience this error including those that run using PPTP - Point to Point Tunneling Protocol.

How to Resolve VPN Error 619

Try the following remedies to resolve the connection issues that trigger this error:

  1. If two or more VPN clients are installed on the computer, ensure only one is running to avoid conflicts. Check both for running applications and also for Windows services. Reboot the computer if necessary to ensure all other applications are stopped.
  2. Firewalls and antivirus programs may be running that block access to the VPN ports. Temporarily disable these to troubleshoot.
  3. Try other standard repairs and troubleshooting steps - reboot the client computer, delete and re-install the VPN client configuration settings, and find others who have working setups to compare for network configuration differences. Intermittent network connectivity issues can cause this error to appear one time but then not re-appear when the user restarts their client.

    Related VPN Error Codes

Several other kinds of virtual network failures can occur that appear similar to VPN error 619:

"There was an internal authentication error" (error 645)

VPN error 645 occurred on obsolete versions of Windows (including Windows XP) when issues with the user name and/or password prevent login.

Users most commonly triggered this error by entering an incorrect password on the client, or by having password encryption enabled.

"Error 800: Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be unreachable, or security parameters may not be configured properly for the connection"

VPN error 800 indicates the client is unable to reach the target VPN server over the network. In contrast, error 619 occurs only after the client reaches the server and attempts to complete the connection process. Users can trigger this error by specifying an invalid VPN server name, for example.

"Error 809: The network connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be established because the remote server is not responding"

Clients report VPN error 809 if their attempts to communicate with the server are unsuccesful and exceed the time limit for Windows VPN connection setup.
