4K Ultra HD TVs are definitely now in the mainstream, and Vizio is one of the major players offering up very affordable sets with good performance combined with practical features.

What may not be as well known is that Vizio is also staking a claim in the high-end TV category with its Reference (R Series) 4K Ultra HD TVs, the RS65-B2, and RS120-B3. The RS120-B3 has the distinction of being the largest 4K Ultra HD TV made available to consumers so far, with a gigantic 120-inch screen size.

4K and more

With their 4K (3840x2160 pixels) screen resolution, both sets are designed to display exceptional detail from both native and upscaled content. Unlike some other high-end competitors, Vizio has opted to incorporate Full-Array LED backlighting in both sets, which is additionally supported by 384 Active Local Dimming LED Zones. This means more precise control of object brightness, as well as consistent black and white levels across the entire screen surface.

In addition, the reference line features a 240Hz screen refresh rate, plus additional processing, to ensure natural motion response.

As part of a further forward-looking strategy, Vizio has incorporated enhanced color processing (Ultra-Color Spectrum), which delivers a color gamut that is wider than current Rec709 HD color standards in combination with High Dynamic Range display capability via Dolby Vision. To support Dolby Vision, both sets in this series can output up to 800 Nits of peak luminance. Also, on the 65-inch model, Quantum Dot Technology is employed to enhance color performance.

To access what the Dolby Vision feature can deliver, you need content that has been mastered using that cutting-edge technology. To that end, Vizio has teamed up with Dolby, Warner, and Vudu to stream Dolby Vision-encoded content in 4K Ultra HD via the internet. It must also be noted that non-Dolby Vision-encoded content will not be enhanced, so it is critical that Vizio and its partners deliver a steady stream of compatible content.

Additional Features

In terms of additional connectivity and compatibility, the R-Series sets also include:

  • Both sets provide 5 HDMI inputs, along with a USB input for accessing compatible media files stored on flash drives. If needed, there is a set of shared composite/component video inputs.
  • HEVC H.265 decoding. This provides support for 4K internet streaming support - including Vudu, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, UltraFlix3, and more.
  • HDCP 2.2. Compliant for secure copy-protection.
  • 120fps 1080p input signal compatibility that may be required for some gaming applications.
  • Built-in Ethernet and Dual Band WiFi for convenient access to the Vizio Internet Apps Plus Streaming Platform is provided.
  • V6 Six-core processor (6 Core CPU) to support fast and efficient menu navigation and feature operation.

The Vizio R-Series sets offer quite a bit, but there is also an added bonus if you opt for the 65-inch set - a built-in 5.1 channel audio system that incorporates a three-channel sound bar built into the TV's base, as well as two surround speakers and a 10-inch wireless subwoofer. The system also provides both Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround decoding and additional DTS audio post-processing.

Note: Those that opt for the 120-inch set most likely have a high-end home theater audio system in place, so having one built-into the TV would not only be redundant but add a lot of extra weight to an already large and heavy TV (It weighs a hefty 385 pounds).

The Price Of Entry And More Info

The RS120 (120 inches) has a suggested price of $129,999.99, while the RS65 (65-inches) has a suggested price of $5,999.99. Unlike the rest of their TV products, which are available from big-box and online retailers, the R-Series sets are only available through Vizio or select independent home theater dealers and installers.

If you like it big and have lots of spare cash, the 120-inches is really impressive. It even comes delivered inside a wheeled crate! That being said, the 65-inch set is the better deal as its price includes a Quantum Dot-enhanced screen, and a full 5.1 channel surround sound system.
