How to Use Xbox Game Pass on Your PC

Game subscription service for Windows 10 users

Xbox Game Pass for PC is a PC game subscription service that gives subscribers access to around 100 video games that can be played in full on Windows 10 computers and tablets.

Similarly to the Netflix service with its TV shows and movies, Xbox Game Pass for PC removes video games from its content library every month and replaces them with newer titles or older ones that have been requested by its users.

As part of an Xbox Game Pass for PC subscription, members are also given discounts on select video games within the Microsoft Store app store on Windows 10.

Does Xbox Game Pass Work on PC?

The Xbox Game Pass for PC subscription service is available on any computer or tablet with the following:

While most games in Xbox Game Pass for PC can be played offline, an internet connection is required for the subscription activation and the initial video game download. Games with online multiplayer will naturally need an internet connection for that functionality to work.

Each game within the Xbox Game Pass for PC library has certain gaming PC hardware requirements listed on their individual product pages within the Xbox (beta) app and Microsoft Store app. Make sure to check these requirements before downloading a game as your computer may not be powerful enough to play some titles.

What Video Games Are in Xbox Game Pass on PC

Xbox Game Pass for PC grants access to a rotating list of PC video games that update several times per month. The majority of titles stay within the library for an extended period of time so there’s little pressure to complete games as quickly as possible.

Only around 10 or so games are removed from the Xbox Game Pass for PC library each month.

Despite the Xbox branding, no Xbox, Xbox 360, or Xbox One console games are made available to play on Windows 10 with an Xbox Game Pass for PC subscription. Some PC versions of console games, such as Sea of Thieves or Minecraft, which are already available on PC, are available, however.

The full list of current Xbox Game Pass for PC video games can be viewed on the official Xbox Game Pass website and within the Xbox (beta) app.

What Is Xbox Game Pass Ultimate?

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is a special version of the Xbox Game Pass PC subscription service that incorporates a variety of Xbox services under the one umbrella. It is more expensive than the Xbox Game Pass for PC subscription model but can be a good option for those that also like to play games on an Xbox console such as the Xbox One.

Here’s what’s included within the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription:

  • Access to all 100+ Xbox Game Pass for PC games on PC.
  • Access to all 100+ Xbox Game Pass for Console games on Xbox One.
  • Access to all 100+ games on Android devices via Cloud gaming (formerly Project xCloud).
  • Xbox Game Pass discounts on game purchases on Windows 10 and Xbox One.
  • Xbox Live Gold membership for online gameplay on Xbox One, four free Xbox console games to own each month, and further discounts on game purchases.

What Do the Xbox Game Pass Apps Do?

The Xbox (beta) app is available to download for free for Windows 10 devices and is required to download titles from the Xbox Game Pass for PC library. This app can also be used to communicate with Xbox friends and managing Xbox One console purchases.

The Xbox Game Pass for PC functionality is expected to roll out to the main Windows 10 Xbox Console Companion app sometime in late-2019 or early-2020. The latter app comes pre-installed on all Windows 10 devices.

A free Xbox Game Pass app is also available for iOS and Android devices. These apps aren’t required to use Xbox Game Pass for PC or Xbox Game Pass for Console but can be a convenient way to browse the current libraries in each plan and manage downloads.
