How to Use a PS5 Controller on Xbox Series X or S

Xbox doesn't support the controller, but you can work around that

What to Know

  • The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles do not have native support for the PS5 DualSense controller.
  • A third-party adapter device can be used to connect the PS5 controller to an Xbox console.
  • PS5 controllers can also be used to play Xbox Series X games via Xbox cloud gaming on smartphones, tablets, and computers.

Can you use a PS5 controller on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles? You can but due to there being no native support for Sony’s PS5 DualSense controllers on Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and S consoles, you’ll have to do so via one of two roundabout methods below.

Method 1: Connect a PS5 Controller to Xbox Series X With an Adapter

The most effective way to use your PS5 controller for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S gaming is to use a specially designed adapter or converter. These work in a similar way to how you would use a power adapter when traveling. Basically one end of the adapter plugs into your video game console while the other is used to connect to your controller either by USB or Bluetooth.

In this case, the adapter would be used to connect your PS5 DualSense controller to your Xbox Series S or X console.

Controller converters can often cost more than an actual Xbox controller. It may be a lot cheaper to simply buy a new Xbox controller for your Xbox Series X.

Controller adapters and converters are very effective as they let you use your controllers on most major video game consoles while also allowing you to play games on your TV as you usually would. Titan Two is a popular adapter that has support for PS5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles and controllers. Cronus Zen is another option though its Xbox Series X and PS5 support isn’t expected to launch fully until mid to late-2021.

Method 2: Play Xbox Series X Games With a PS5 Controller via Xbox Cloud Gaming

The Xbox cloud gaming service, previously called Project xCloud, lets gamers stream Xbox Series X video games from Microsoft’s servers directly to their computer or smart device.

The cool thing about Xbox cloud gaming is that, once the video game is streaming, almost any controller you’ve connected to your device can be used to play it. And, lucky for you, PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers can connect to Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. In addition the PlayStation 5 controller can connect to Windows and Macs with no hacking or additional hardware required.

As of January 2020, Xbox cloud gaming is only available on Android devices though it’s expected to launch on iOS, Windows, and Mac by mid-2021.

Is There a PS5 Xbox Controller?

An official PS5 Xbox controller doesn’t exist. If you’ve heard someone mention this in conversation or on a YouTube video, they’re likely referring to a third-party controller or maybe even an adapter or converter product such as the ones mentioned above.

Will Xbox Series X Consoles Add PS5 Controller Support?

It’s unlikely that Microsoft would add support for Sony’s controllers to their Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S consoles as they’d understandably want to encourage gamers to purchase Microsoft-made products. It could happen but it would be unwise to wait until it does as you could be waiting a very long time.

If you need an additional controller for your Xbox Series X or S console, it’s best to simply buy a new one or even a second-hand one. There’s a number of first and third-party controllers to choose from at various price points and Xbox-branded controllers designed for the Xbox One consoles and Windows PCs will also work on an Xbox Series S or X.
