Businesses devise disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BC) plans to mitigate an extensive variety of business threats, including those that involve data centers. Some businesses devise strategies that focus on particular risks, update them and also test them. Organizations have to perform better if they need to be successful. It’s important to work with the perfect advanced data center in order to fill in any gaps.

Are There Specific Plans?

Several companies may have advanced DR or BC plans in place, while some may not have anything in place or might have a very generic plan. In a broad survey that was conducted recently among data center decision makers, 82% of respondents have one or the other kind of DR plan. This leaves almost 1/5th of businesses without any DR plan in place. 

Yet another survey shows a higher preparation level, finding 93% of businesses having formed documented BC plans. Another shortcoming revealed by this survey is that just 50% of the respondents had formed BC architectures that considered discrete risks.

If the plan is not specific, its practicality is mitigated as different kinds of threats and instances need custom responses. 

Are You Updating Plans Regularly?

Among businesses that have plans, the image also seems segmented between those who just set it and tend to forget and those actively updating them.

Few companies are evidently active. Based on a survey result, two among five respondents were assessing a new DR plan. Though construction of new data is comparatively flat among companies planning to develop in the coming 2 years, devising DR architecture was one amongst the three common reasons. However, these attempts were just a part of the scenario.

 

The natural tendency seems to be writing a plan and later just leaving it without any updates. Just 14% of the respondents in the survey seemed to be updating their BC plans regularly. A majority of them update their plans once in a year or even less frequently.  

Testing the Plans

Testing the plans is as important as devising one and updating it regularly. Many businesses lag behind in this façade too, exposing them to threats. 

In the survey, around 67% of respondents performed a yearly test, which just reviews the plant layout and content and 32% did a complete simulation yearly. As per expert recommendation, it’s ideal to conduct tests twice annually or at least once in a year. 

Handling Advanced Data Center 

When using a data center for BC/DR solutions, it’s important to make sure that the upfront study is correct. Decide which apps have to be up and running for uninterrupted business operations. What should their level of service be? This can help you to decide the RTOs or recovery-time objectives. This is the point where there’s a replication of a production database by a backup service. 

Businesses need data centers for two kinds of solutions. The first is wherein an organization with zero or minimal downtime tolerance requires it for a second physical illustration of an application and service.

Some other organizations with extended RTOs may need it for virtual servers that run DR architecture for some apps in a DRaaS (disaster-recovery-as-a-service) model. In both of these cases, the BC or DR strategies should consider particular circumstances with solutions addressing specific technologies. 

Data centers should be very resilient and this involves different connectivity routes, redundant sources of power, and security measures that are inbuilt in the site location as well as every design layer.
