Did you block someone by mistake on Instagram? Maybe you blocked your boss or you wanted to prevent someone from being notified about your Instagram posts, but only for a while?

There are many reasons to block, and just as many to unblock someone on Instagram. No matter your motives, the steps to take for unblocking are easy.

How to Unblock Someone on Instagram

To remove someone from your list of blocked users on Instagram using the Instagram app for iOS, Android and Windows:

  1. Find the blocked user in Instagram.
Tips: You can use people search: on the search tab (🔎), tap Search > People and type the user name over Search people. As an alternative, look for the user to unblock in your list of blocked users; see below.
  2. Tap the profile you want to unblock.
  3. Now tap the menu button (··· on iOS and  on Android and Windows).
  4. Select Unblock from the menu that has appeared.
  5. On iOS and Windows, tap Unblock under Unblock User? to confirm.
On Android, tap Yes, I'm sure under Are you sure?.
  6. On iOS and Windows, now tap Dismiss.

How to Unblock Someone on Instagram on a Computer via the Web

To unblock a user using the Instagram web site on a computer with your desktop web browser:

  1. Visit Instagram on the web in your browser.
  2. Log on to your Instagram account using Log in if you are not yet logged in.
  3. Click Search.
  4. Type the user name of the account or name of the person you want to unblock.
  1. Now select the desired user from the auto-complete suggestions.
Note: Instagram may show the user account as unavailable. In this case, you need to unblock the account using the Instagram app for iOS or Android; see above.
  2. Click the menu button (···) next to the user name.
  3. Select Unblock this user from the menu that has appeared.

Can I See a List of All Profiles I Have Blocked on Instagram?

Yes, Instagram maintains a list of all the profiles you have blocked. To see it in the Instagram app for iOS or Android:

    1. Go to your profile page (👤) in Instagram.
    2. On iOS, tap the settings gear icon (⚙️) near the top.
On Android, tap the menu button () at the page's top.
    3. Select Blocked Users under ACCOUNT.

Tap any blocked user to get to their profile, where you can unblock them; see above. On the Instagram web site, you cannot access the list of blocked users.

What Happens If You Unblock Someone on Instagram?

When you unblock an account in Instagram, the restrictions associated with blocking someone are lifted. That means they

    • will be able to find you again using Instagram search;
    • can see your posts and stories again;
    • will be able to follow you again (this will not happen automatically, though); and
    • they can send you private messages using Instagram Direct again.
Note: If you have allowed direct messages from the user before, you will also receive all messages they sent in the meantime. If you have not exchanged direct messages with them, the first message from the user after you unblock them will only appear as a request in Instagram Direct.

The user will not be notified when you unblock them.

How Long Does It Take to Unblock on Instagram

True to part of its name, Instagram will unblock the user just about instantaneously. Depending on internet speed and server load, it can take a few seconds, but not much longer.

After Unblocking Someone on Instagram, Do I Have to Follow Them Again to Get Updates?

If you have blocked someone on Instagram, you have also unfollowed them, and new posts or stories will not appear in your Instagram stream. You also cannot follow a blocked account until you have unblocked it.

To follow the user again after you have unblocked them:

      1. Look for and open the user's profile in Instagram.
This works in the Instagram apps for iOS and Android just as well as it does on the web.
      2. Click Follow.

Can I Unblock Someone Who Also Blocked Me on Instagram?

Trying to unblock someone who has, in turn, blocked you on Instagram can be a frustrating and, alas, usually fruitless experience. This is because you are blocked from seeing the account, and you need to access the account menu to unblock them.

Your best bet is an @mention, say in a private message:

      1. Tap the Instagram Direct icon (a paper airplane) in Instagram for iOS or Android.
      2. Tap + to start a new message.
      3. Write your own Instagram user name under To:.
Using Instagram for iOS, tap Next.
      4. Write @ followed directly by the user name of the account you wish to unblock.
Example: For the user heinztsc, type:
        @heinztsc
      5. Tap Send.
      6. Now tap the highlighted user name in the message you just sent.
      7. Open the user profile menu (··· on iOS and  on Android).
      8. Select Unblock from the menu that has appeared and confirm your choice.
Note: If the person has changed their user name since you blocked them, you will not be able to unblock them using this method.

If the direct message trick does not work for you, here are a few more locations you can try to access the account you want to unblock, though most or all of them may be inaccessible depending on the app and platform you are using:

      • A photo or video you saved privately to your account or a collection.

Can I Unblock or Remove Blocked Accounts That No Longer Exist?

Depending on the app or web site, it may not be possible to unblock Instagram profiles that have been deleted or removed since you blocked them. Their names will appear on your Blocked Users list with no way to interact with them.

Tip: If possible, try the Instagram app on a different platform. We have seen Instagram for Android able to unblock users that the Instagram web site and iOS app reported as nonexistent or inaccessible.

One thing you can do to avoid stale accounts on your Instagram "Blocked Users" list is reporting suspicious accounts and activity to Instagram (Report… > It's spam or Report… > It's inappropriate in the user's menu) instead of blocking users that you deem to be fake accounts.

(Unblocking someone on Instagram tested with Instagram for iOS 10, Instagram for Android 10 and the Instagram web site using a desktop browser.)
