This article explains how to completely power off all versions of the PS4 console, and how to put it in Rest Mode. How to Turn off Your PlayStation 4 Completely Turning your PS4 off completely is recommended if you need to unplug your PS4 and move it elsewhere. When you do this, the console won't be able to download updates, and all current game sessions will end. Press and hold the same PS4 power button, for approximately seven seconds until you hear two second beeps. If you release the button after the first beep, you'll put it in Rest Mode. Sony The television screen will display the message: "Preparing to turn off the PS4..." and warn you to not unplug the AC power cord during this process. The power indicator of your PS4 will pulsate in a white color until completely turning off; after the indicator light is gone, it is safe to unplug your AC power cord. Unplugging the AC power cord while the indicator light is lit or pulsating may result in accidental data corruption. How to Put Your PlayStation 4 in Rest Mode PS4 owners can put their console in Rest Mode, meaning that the console can still receive and download updates even if it isn't sending a signal to your television screen. Additionally, you can resume progress on your game sessions right where you left off after powering on your console from Rest Mode. If your home loses power while your PS4 is in Rest Mode, you will receive a warning upon turning on your PS4 that data could have been corrupted; be sure to turn off your PS4 completely during electrical storms. Locate the Power Button on your PlayStation 4. On a standard PS4 model, this button is on the top center-left of your console, above the eject button. Press and hold this button for only one or two seconds; the PS4 will make a single beep noise, and the TV screen will give the message: "Putting the PS4 into rest mode..." Observe the indicator light, which is the vertical thin light on the top of the PS4; as the PS4 goes into Rest Mode, it will pulsate and turn from white to orange. How to Turn off the PlayStation 4 Slim and Pro To put your PS4 Slim or Pro in Rest Mode, or to turn it off entirely, follow the above instructions for the standard PS4. However, the power buttons are a bit different on each console. Find the PS4 Slim's Power Button The PS4 Slim is noticeably smaller than its older, larger brother. As such, the buttons on the Slim model are also smaller, and therefore a bit harder to find. On your PS4 Slim, look to the left of the device's disc slot. You will see an oblong-shaped power button, and to its right are tiny lights that serve as the power indicator. Sony Find the PS4 Pro's Power Button The PS4 Pro is a behemoth of a console, and its power and eject buttons are quite unconventional. The Pro has three "layers" to its design, as opposed to the two layers of the standard PS4 and the Slim. On the bottom of the middle layer is a long power button; notice that it is horizontal instead of vertical, like that of the standard PS4. Beneath it is a thin light strip that acts as the power indicator. Sony Was this page helpful? Thanks for letting us know! Get the Latest Tech News Delivered Every Day Subscribe Tell us why!
