How to Turn off Notifications on Android

This article explains how to turn off Android push notifications and remove notification content from your lock screen. Instructions apply to Android 10, Android 9.0 Pie, and Android 8.0 Oreo.

How to Turn off Notifications for Individual Apps

If you know exactly which apps you want to turn off notifications for, the process is straightforward, but there are two possible methods. Some devices might have slightly different menus.

To start, find the app on your device's home screen or in the app drawer. When you've found the app, follow this process:

1. Tap and hold the icon of the app you want to block until a pop-up menu appears.

2. From the pop-up menu, tap App info or the information symbol (an "i" inside a circle).

3. Tap either Notifications or App Notifications.

   Alternatively, tap Settings > Apps & notifications, then tap the app icon.

4. On this final page, you'll see the available notification options for the app. Tap the Show notifications toggle at the top of the page to disable all notifications, or tap individual notifications types to disable.

How to Stop Notifications From Apps You Can't Identify

If you're frequently getting notifications, but are struggling to identify which app is sending them, you'll need to wait until one of the offending alerts pops up.

In this case, the app could be sending advertisements as notifications that don't draw a clear connection to the app. When one appears, follow these steps:

1. Pull down from the top of your screen to open the notification drop-down shade.

2. Tap and hold the notification you wish to disable.

3. While continuing to hold, swipe just slightly to the left, but not far enough to dismiss it.

4. Tap the gear icon that appears.

5. Toggle off the notification.

6. To ensure all notifications types from the app are blocked, tap More Settings to see all the app's notification options.

7. From here, toggle off all notifications or toggle off just the notification types you wish to stop receiving.

How to Disable Lock-Screen Notifications

If you want to continue receiving notifications from your apps, but want to prevent them from displaying on your device's lock screen, the process is similar to disabling an app's notifications.

1. Go to Settings > Apps & notifications.

2. Scroll down and tap Notifications > On the lock screen.

3. Tap Don't show notifications at all to block all notifications on the lock screen. You can also tap Hide sensitive notification content to hide only the contents.
