Knowing how to turn off your Nintendo Switch is an important way to keep your console charged and ready to play with whenever you want to. Fortunately, Nintendo has ensured there are two ways to switch off your Nintendo Switch. Here's how to turn off your Switch via the physical power button.

These instructions apply to both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite. 

  1. Look at the top of your Nintendo Switch.

  2. Locate the power button on the left-hand side between the left trigger button and the volume controls. 

    The power button has a power logo embossed on it.

  3. Tap the button to put the Nintendo Switch into Sleep Mode.

    Hold the button in to bring up the options to turn the console off fully. 

How to Turn Off Your Nintendo Switch via the Console

If you'd prefer to turn off your Nintendo Switch console via the console's software, that's also an option. Here's how to do it.

  1. On your Nintendo Switch, hold in the power button for about two seconds.

  1. While your Nintendo Switch is turned off, hold the power button in for a moment.

  2. Wait for the console to start up. 

  3. Press A three times to enter the Nintendo Switch home screen. 

How to Put Your Nintendo Switch Into Sleep Mode

Sleep Mode is an excellent way of leaving your Nintendo Switch ready for action. It means the game you're currently playing is in a paused state, so you can hop straight back into where you left off by coming out of Sleep Mode. There are different ways to use it.

Sleep Mode uses slightly more battery life than leaving your Nintendo Switch turned off.

  1. Tap the home button on your console. 

    You can also simply tap the power button to automatically go into Sleep Mode. 

  2. Scroll down to the power icon on the Home Menu.

  3. Tap Sleep Mode.

  4. Tap Sleep Mode a second time.

  5. Your console is now in Sleep Mode.

    Tap the home button on your console to bring it out of Sleep Mode.

How to Change Nintendo Switch Sleep Mode Settings

If you want to have more control over Sleep Mode, you can tweak some of the settings. Here's where to look.

  1. On the Nintendo Switch Home Menu, tap System Settings.

  2. Scroll down to Sleep Mode.

  3. Choose to change how long a period of inactivity there needs to be until the console automatically goes into Sleep Mode and choose whether to disable the feature while watching media content. 

  4. Press B to leave the menu once you're satisfied with your choices.
