Top Printers for Home and Small Offices

Printers that also scan and make copies (and sometimes fax)

The printers below were among the top machines of their day--2010. Here we are six years later, and most of them aren't available anymore. Hence, here is a link to's latest review of entry-level all-in-one (AIO) printers designed for both home offices and small business offices. Here, too, if you're looking for something beefier is a list of reviews of midrange business printers: Top Business Inkjet AIOs.

Some home offices prefer photo printers. You can find the latest consumer-grade photo printers in this "Consumer-Grade photo printers" article

Printers for small and home offices need to be a bit more heavy-duty than other printers. They also need a lot of extras, such as automatic document feeders, extra paper trays, duplex printing, and the ability to be networked on wired or wireless networks. Here are some printers I've tried that can get the job done.

Brother HL-3070CW Color Digital Printer

Brother's HL-3070CW digital printer is a very good deal--for about $250 it can compete easily with color laser printers. (An LED printer uses LEDs rather than a single laser as a light source.) I found it fast, relatively easy to set up (though wireless could've been a tad simpler), and the output (color and black) excellent. Replacement toner isn't cheap (around $70 per cartridge), but the black cartridges are estimated for 2,200 pages and the color ones for about 1,400 pages, so they should last a long time. The HP OfficeJet 4500 Wireless is not exactly a speed demon, but for the price (I saw it as low as $129.99, and cheaper if you don't want wireless), it's a very good deal. For that price, built-in wireless, an automatic document feeder, fax, and (manual) duplex come as welcome surprises. Print quality for text documents was not the best I've seen, and duplex pages will bleed through, but color photos looked lush and wonderful. Buy from Amazon »

The Lexmark S605 Interact is a decent three-in-one printer that offers some great benefits, in particular a large and intelligently designed touchscreen, and a host of customizable applications that make it simple to tailor the printer, scanner, and copier functions to your exact needs. Those options, rather than the speed or quality of the printer (which are completely acceptable), are what make this new printer an exciting and compelling best buy for a home-based office. Samsung CLX-6200 All-in-One Color Laser Printer

A great all-in-one color laser printer for small businesses who want to stay productive. It has everything a business could want, and it provides high-quality laser prints in rich color. It's very large and heavy, so be prepared to bring a friend or two to help you move it, particularly if you've got to go up or down stairs; but once it's in place, it will get the job done right.
