Top Post Apocalyptic Video Games

Fallout 3

The Top Post Apocalyptic PC games are my picks for the best games set in a post-apocalyptic world, that is a world in which human civilization as we know it today has collapsed beyond repair and those remaining are left to pick up the pieces and try to survive in a hostile world. Post Apocalyptic games can cover a wide range of genre and settings including present day/near future, distant future, alternative history and many more. A related theme or sub-theme of post apocalyptic setting is a zombie apocalypse, more great games from this setting can be found on my list of Top Zombie Apocalypse Games.

Fallout 3

Buy From Amazon

Release Date: Oct 28, 2009
Genre: Action Role Playing Game
Game Modes: Single player
Game Series: Fallout
Fallout 3 picks up the story from Fallout 2. Set just 36 years after the events of Fallout 2, players take on the role of a survivor from Vault 101. After the unfortunate disappearance of the protagonist's father, he sets out from the Vault in hopes of finding him. The Fallout 3 setting takes place in Capital City, which is the ruins of Washington DC. The game features a lot of new features such as V.A.T.S, Companions, Detailed ability/attribute trees and much more. The game also does an excellent job of staying true to the story rich game play that was found in the first two Fallout games. There are five different DLC packs released for Fallout 3, which makes the total amount of game play available rather staggering. The DLC Packs include "Operation: Anchorage", "The Pitt", "Broken Steel", "Point Lookout", and "Mothership Zeta".

Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Genre: Action Role Playing Game
Theme: Post-Apocalyptic

The latest chapter in the Fallout series of post apocalyptic video games is also one of the best. In it players will once again take on the role of a Vault survivor as they venture out into an unknown wasteland. This time the game is set in the New England/Boston area of what was the former United States.

The game's expansive world is a true open game world where players have the freedom to do many side quests and based building in addition to the over arching story based missions. The game is polished with fantastic graphics and visuals coupled with intuitive game mechanics that has helped make the series so popular.

Genre: Action RPG

Wasteland 2, The sequel we waited over 25 years for did not disappoint and finds itself as my Game of the Year winner for 2014. The post-apocalyptic sequel that was a run away kickstarter success was released in September 2014 and has been also been a commercial success. Set some fifteen years after the original Wasteland, players control a part of new Desert Ranger recruits who are assigned to find out who or what is behind the murder of long time Desert Ranger named Ace. Like its predecessor, Wasteland 2 contains dozens of different skills characters can focus on, coupled with the open world and open ended story, the game has a good amount of replayability.
