Top PC Games of 2015

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
CD Projekt RED

Another year has come and gone so it's once again time for everyone's "Top Picks" and "Best of" 2015 lists. In reviewing all the great PC games that came out this year, and there are many worthy games that just these ten, it occurred to me that this year is the first year that I can remember in the 10+ years I have been writing about video and PC games that not one single traditional first person shooter is on the list. Now that's nothing against the list of first person shooters released in 2015, there were many top notch titles such as the best Call of Duty title of the past 3-4 years in Call of Duty: Black Ops III, a fun Battlefield: Hardline and my personal favorite Wolfenstein: The New Order. Rather it says more about the breadth of high quality games that are released for the PC from all genre. SO without further ado, here are my favorite and Top PC Games of 2015.

Release Date: Jul 7, 2015
Genre: Sports
Theme: Soccer
Game Modes: Single player, Multiplayer

Rocket League is a unique soccer video game that features rocket powered cars of all different shapes and sizes and the soccer players. In the game players will use the cars to hit a over-sized soccer ball into their opponents goal. The game is part demolition derby, part soccer that is one of the funniest games that I've played in a long time. Rocket League also supports cross platform multiplayer so players on a PS4 could be playing (at a clear disadvantage) against gamers on a Windows PC.

Coming in at number nine on my Top PC Games of 2015 is Galactic Civilizations III a turn based 4X strategy game from Stardock that continues Galactic Civilizations tradition. With this release Stardock has another solid and critically very well received game. The game is a PC exclusive and it is the first entry in the series to feature multiplayer game modes. Galactic Civilizations III is set ten years after the Dread Lords expansion for Galactic Civilizations II. The game is easily the best 4X strategy game to be released not only this year but the past few years, it features the same hex based game play as previous titles and fully custom ships and civilizations.

8. Heroes of the Storm

Heroes of the Storm
Blizzard Entertainment

Release Date: Jun 2, 2015
Genre: Multiplayer Online Battle Arena
Theme: Fantasy/Sci-Fi
Game Modes: Multiplayer

Heroes of the Storm like the other popular multiplayer online battle arena powerhouses of Dota 2 and League of Legends, and a great team fighting aspect that helps separate if from the other MOBAs in that your team is only as strong as your weakest member. That is rather than individual hero leveling, all heroes on the team level at the same time. This is just one aspect of Heroes of the Storm which helps in land in my top 10 PC Games of 2015. Another element that has helped this game grown in popularity is bringing all of the main heroes and villains from Blizzard Entertainment's huge library together in a single game. Players can select a hero from the StarCraft series as they fight against villains from Diablo series.

Since the release Heroes of the Storm has received a number of updates and favorable reviews and the best part is that the game, like many of the other MOBA games, is completely free to download and play.

Release Date: Nov 10, 2015
Genre: Real Time Strategy
Theme: Sci-Fi
Game Modes: Single player, multiplayer

Number six on my list of Top PC Games of 2015 is StarCraft II Legacy of the Void. Legacy of the Void is the third and final chapter in the StarCraft II trilogy which centers around the Protoss faction. The single player portion of the game will have players trying to unite the various Protoss factions to fight together against the Zerg and Terran. The multiplayer component introduces a number of new units for all three factions. 5. Pillars of Eternity

Paradox Interactive

Release Date: Mar 26, 2015
Genre: Role Playing Game
Theme: Fantasy
Game Modes: Single player

In the minds of many PC gamers, and particularly fans of computer role playing games, there has been a void in the genre since the release of the classic computer RPGs Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and Planscape Torment released in the late 1990s by Black Isle Studios and BioWare. That was until the crowd funded Pillars of Eternity was released in March of this year. Pillars of Eternity features a look and feel that is very similar to those classic RPGs games and it has been anointed as their spiritual successor.

Specific game features include gameplay that is played from third person, overhead bird's eye point of view and real time and pause based tactical combat. Players create a character to their liking from a number of different races and classes, and then recruit party members to help in completing missions and side quests.

2. Grand Theft Auto V

Grand Theft Auto V 4K Screenshot
Rockstar Games

Release Date: Apr 14, 2015
Genre: Action/Adventure
Theme: Crime
Game Modes: Single player, multiplayer

It took over a year after Grand Theft Auto V was initially released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 console systems to come to the PC, but it was definitely worth the wait. Grand Theft Auto V is the first release since 2008's Grand Theft Auto V and it can be played from both the first and third person point of view. In it players take on the role of three protagonists as they accept and complete missions and side quests for criminal bosses.

When released the game received near universal critical acclaim for its graphics, large open world, the ability to switch between first and third person perspective and voice acting just to name a few. The game was not without controversy however mostly in regards to a mission that requires players to torture a hostage using various techniques including electrocution, waterboarding and more.

1. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt - Game of the Year Winner

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
CD Projekt RED

Release Date: May 19, 2015
Genre: Action Role Playing Game
Theme: Fantasy
Game Modes: Single player

My top PC game for 2015 is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a game with game play, graphics and story that goes unmatched when compared with the other PC titles released this year.

The Wither 3: Wild Hunt is the third title in the Witcher series of third person action role playing games. The game brings the storyline of Geralt to a close and developer CD Projekt RED definitely saved their best for last with this one. The game is simply massive, with an open game world that is larger than both the previous Witcher titles combined.

Like many of the games on the list The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt was met with critical acclaim winning several E3 awards prior to its release and then excellent reviews upon its release. The game is most noted for its game play, story, and the huge, open world which allows players a great deal of freedom in completing missions and moving the story forward.
