Whether it's the regular season or the playoffs or if you just can't get enough of the NHL, a quick visit to Google Play will provide you several apps to both keep you informed and entertained.

Whatever your team, your Android device will keep you connected, inspired, and in the action.

All the apps below should be equally available no matter which company makes your Android phone, including Samsung, Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc.

NHL Gamecenter

What We Like

  • Easy integration across multiple devices.

  • The definitive source of information about your favorite teams.

What We Don't Like

  • No Chromecast support.

  • Plagued by slow load times and technical bugs.

Every major sport has at least one premier app that gives fans news, updates, and highlights. For the NHL, that app is the NHL app. Focused exclusively to the NHL, this app provides hockey news, scores, updates and all the stats and team information you could ask for.

There were previous versions of this app that, depending on your budget and hunger for live broadcasts, would fill the need. But the current, free version has been updated to help hockey fans connect with their favorite teams and the hockey action they crave.

NHL News Feed

What We Like

  • Doesn't take up any space on your device.

  • Easy to set up with any RSS reader app.

What We Don't Like

  • Doesn't always have the most up-to-date scores.

  • No customization features for following specific teams.

If you just need a steady stream of NHL news, then the free NHL News Feed app may be all you need. Really nothing more than a news feeder, this app is a convenient way to keep up to date with all things hockey.

NHL News Feed also provides scoring updates though I found the updates are often slow and inconsistent. Still, considering that this news streamer is a free app (ad-supported) it is certainly worth the memory space on your Android device.

The Hockey News

What We Like

  • Has a massive back catalog of old issues of the print magazine.

  • Supported by a team of professional sports journalists.

What We Don't Like

  • No longer lets you read the latest issues of the magazine for free.

  • Users complain of performance issues and poor customer support.

Very few apps provide hockey news as well as The Hockey News app. This free app (ad-supported) is a reliable and steady stream of hockey news. Being a big hockey fan, I use more than a few hockey related apps. I've found that The Hockey News often gets news and updates more quickly than some of my other hockey apps.

The scoring updates are a bit slower than what the Game Center app provides but are accurate and timely enough.

All in all, this is one of the most frequently used Android apps for hockey.

Hockey Nations 2018

What We Like

  • Short game rounds are perfect for a mobile title.

  • Thorough tutorial makes the game accessible to everyone.

What We Don't Like

  • You have to sit through a bunch of ads between games.

  • The computer AI behaves rather predictably.

Though there are many air hockey games available for Android devices, there are only a few simulated hockey games that are worth a mention. Hockey Nations 2018 is one of them. Using touch-screen controls, Hockey Nation puts you in the action on one of 14 international hockey teams.

The play is a bit choppy and the controls take a bit to master, but overall, the gameplay is fun, enjoyable and gives you a hockey fix when needed.

The app is free and plays and looks much better on bigger screened devices. If you have any of the Android phones with a 4 inch or bigger display, Hockey Nations is a solid game.

Hockey Score Keeper Sounds

What We Like

  • Ability to add your own sounds and songs makes watching hockey with friends more personal and exciting.

What We Don't Like

  • Takes up a lot of space for limited benefits.

  • The Android version is buggy.

If the nearest NHL team is too far away for you to visit, the Hockey Score Keeper Sounds app lets you hear the beautiful and sweet sound of hockey any time you want.

You can set the sound as your default ringer, for a particular contact, or use it as an alarm for calendar items or to wake up in the morning.

The app is small in size but the sounds are clean and well recorded. And if your team is having trouble finding the net, launching this app may just provide them the inspiration they need.
