Where this positive became a detriment, however, was when it comes time to tip the driver. Do You Need to Tip an Uber Driver Up until recently, the Uber app did not allow for gratuity. In fact, it was somewhat discouraged as the company's public stance was that riders were not expected to leave a tip. It turns out some folks like to tip, and the company listened to the backlash by passengers and drivers alike, eventually caving in and allowing riders to add gratuity. Whether or not you want to leave a tip, however, is still entirely up to you and is often dictated by the type of experience you had on the trip as well as how long the ride was. Should You Tip an Uber Driver As is the case with most other service industries, it is customary to tip an Uber driver if you feel that you've had a pleasant ride and especially if he or she went above and beyond typical expectations. We spoke with several Uber drivers who said a tip (or lack thereof) does not influence how they rate a passenger. One might wonder, however, if it could influence getting picked up in a timely fashion in the future. How to Tip Uber Drivers As soon as a ride has ended, Uber will send a push notification to your device asking you to rate the driver. Swiping this notification will open the app to the rating screen, where you can select between one and five stars as well as leave an optional compliment. Also on this screen is a section labeled Add a tip for [driver name], accompanied by three buttons containing varying dollar amounts (i.e., $1, $3, $5). To leave a tip using one of these figures, choose the desired option and tap on the Done button. If you'd like to leave more, less or something in between, select the Enter Custom Amount link and enter the tip in dollars and cents. And of course, you can always choose to go the old-fashioned route and tip your driver with cash. Tipping Later Another convenient feature in Uber's tipping system is the ability to leave a tip at a later time, even several weeks after a trip took place. Perhaps you were in a hurry and didn't have time to acknowledge the mentioned above notification when it first appeared, or maybe you had a great Uber experience a few days ago and just now remembered that you'd like to express gratitude to your driver with an after-the-fact tip. To do so, take the following steps. Launch the Uber app.Tap on the menu button, located in the upper left-hand corner of the screen and represented by three horizontal lines.A slide-out menu should now appear, containing multiple options. Select Your Trips.A record of your past Uber trips will now be displayed. Scroll down until you find the ride for which you'd like to leave a tip and then select it.You should now see the Trip Details screen, containing information about that particular ride. Tap on the Add a tip link, located directly under the fare amount.Enter the desired gratuity amount in dollars and cents and select the Set Tip button.A confirmation message will now appear, asking if you're sure that you want to leave this tip. To continue, tap the YES button to complete the process. To cancel, select NO.
