TikTok Experimenting With Stories Feature

Videos disappear after 24 hours

TikTok is experimenting with a Stories feature within the app—similar to stories across other social media platforms.

Social media consultant Matt Navarra first spotted the new stories feature and shared it on his Twitter page on Wednesday. TikTok has since confirmed to The Verge that the feature, known as “TikTok Stories,” is in the works.

TikTok said its Stories feature will live in a brand new sidebar. Just like Snapchat, Instagram, and other platforms, TikTok’s stories will only last 24 hours before being deleted.

TikTok Stories also will have similar features to other platforms, such as the ability to react or comment on a story and go to a user’s profile directly from their story. In addition, the Verge reports that users can add captions, music, and text to their Stories.

However, unlike Instagram or Snapchat Stories, TikTok will only let you post videos, not still photos.

Some TikTok users already reportedly have access to TikTok Stories, but there are no details on how long the test will last and if the feature will become a permanent mainstay on the app.

While a stories feature has been successful for many platforms, some haven’t had as much luck with it. For example, Twitter launched its own stories feature it dubbed as “Fleets” last November, but removed the feature this week after only eight months on the platform. Twitter said the feature wasn’t as popular as it had hoped.

With TikTok having always been a video-centric platform, the stories feature could prove to be a good addition to the popular app.
