In a single year, the Thumb app by Opinionaided, Inc. had made great strides to become second to Facebook in the average length of time per user per month. sat down with CEO Dan Kurani to talk about the history of the app and how it has risen in the ranks so quickly.

How to Write Questions People Will Jump to Respond

If you are seeking a lot of opinions or comments to your Thumb questions, there are a few things you can do to ensure you get the feedback you are looking for, says Opinionaided, Inc. CEO Dan Kurani. Follow these simple tips and you'll be crafting well-formulated queries that will get attention from the Thumb community:

  • Make Sure It's Opinion-Based. "[The app is] not for doing homework, like answering a math question or to find out who was the 16th president," Dan shared. So, make sure you are asking for an opinion or end with something like "Any suggestions?" to prompt more comments.
  • Don't Ask an Open-Ended Question. Some of the best questions solicit an opinion between two things, whether it is a yes or no decision ("Should I buy these shoes? TU or TD") or a comparison ("Tacos or Enchiladas?"), Dan said.
  • Go for the Emotional. In terms of comment-grabbers, things which resonate emotionally such as artwork often prompts more comments, he said.

Top Tips for Getting More Good Advice Stars

Good Advice stars are the currency of the Thumb community and go a long way to helping you get recognized as a top adviser among other users. This can lead to recognition from Thumb's developers and lead to all sorts of perks. But, the secret to getting more Good Advice stars is writing thoughtful comments. Here's how to do it:

  1. Read the Question Carefully. When you approach a query on the app, make sure you understand what they are asking for before you answer. Then, craft a response which gives them a direct opinion or answer to what they are asking.
  2. Consider the Source. If someone is asking whether you like something specific, like a singer or a movie, the chances are likely greater they like that topic or thing themselves. Answering accordingly, but be kind.
  3. Mind Your Manners. Especially if the question revolves around a hot button issue, answer honestly but without passing judgment. Even if your answer does not fit how the Thumber feels about the issue, your ability to discuss without name-calling or being negative can go a long way to building a good rapport with people.
  4. Always Comment. There will be instances in which you don't know how to answer, and that is okay. That's why there is a neutral button. But, if you include a nice compliment, whether it be about the photo they used or a thought on the topic, regardless of how you vote, you have a better shot of getting a comment.
  5. Look for Free Star Opportunities. Some Thumbers will give a star for any answer, so always take advantage of these questions.
  6. Change Your Category to Suit Your Specialty. If you have a lot of knowledge in a certain subject, getting questions from a limited number of categories can help you gain more Good Advice stars faster.
