At the time of its release PC game demos were a tool that gave developers/publishers the opportunity to entice gamers into purchasing their game. The Age of Empires II Age of Kings demo offered (and technically still offers) players the chance to experience the game before having to purchase it. It was first made available via the Microsoft Age of Empires II website and was also released in CD format by a number of PC gaming magazines such as PC Gamer and Computer Gaming World and third-party hosting sites. The Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings demo offered a few gameplay options that give gamers a good indication of gameplay and features available. Game content included in the demo was the William Wallace learning campaign which served as the tutorial mission for the full version. In addition to the William Wallace tutorial mission, the Age of Empires II demo also includes a random skirmish game against AI opponents and a four-player multiplayer game on a random map. This multiplayer portion of the demo will require some extra steps in order to play.
