Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings

The Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings PC game demo was released on October 16, 1999, which was about two weeks after the release of the full version of the game. At the time of its release PC game demos were a tool that gave developers/publishers the opportunity to entice gamers into purchasing their game. The Age of Empires II Age of Kings demo offered (and technically still offers) players the chance to experience the game before having to purchase it. It was first made available via the Microsoft Age of Empires II website and was also released in CD format by a number of PC gaming magazines such as PC Gamer and Computer Gaming World and third-party hosting sites.

The Age of Empires II: The Age of ​Kings demo offered a few gameplay options that give gamers a good indication of gameplay and features available. Game content included in the demo was the William Wallace learning campaign which served as the tutorial mission for the full version. In addition to the William Wallace tutorial mission, the Age of Empires II demo also includes a random skirmish game against AI opponents and a four-player multiplayer game on a random map. This multiplayer portion of the demo will require some extra steps in order to play. Age of Empires II unitized MSN Gaming Zone for match-matching and this game, as well as the original Age of Empires, has been retired from MSN Games. In order to play online via the demo players will have to download and install GameRanger which is the online gaming application used to support multiplayer capability for older games.

About Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings & Age of Empires II HD

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings is the second full release in the popular Age of Empires series of real-time strategy games developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Games. The game was very well received by both critics and gamers alike when released in 1999. It currently holds a 92 out of 100 rating on MetaCritic review aggregate website. In the game, players will manage a civilization from history through four different ages managing everything from building construction, resource gathering, technology research, military unit creation, and war. The game includes five different single player campaigns and a robust multiplayer skirmish mode with support for up to eight players. One expansion was released for Age of Kings titled The Conquerors which included five new civilizations.

In 2013 Age of Empires II HD Edition was released which updated the game to work on screen higher resolutions and matchmaking via Steam. In addition to remaking the original game and including the Conquerors expansion, Age of Empires II HD has seen the release of two expansions of its own. The Forgotten which is based on a fan-made expansion that includes five new civilizations, seven single-player campaigns as well as new game modes, technologies and more. The second Age of Empires II HD Expansion is titled The African Kingdoms. Released in 2015, it includes four new civilizations, four new campaigns, and new game modes, units and more.
