TextPlus App Review

TextPlus (Free) is one of the many texting apps available for the iPod touch. Although it’s especially valuable for the iTouch, which doesn’t include a phone, even iPhone users can benefit from the free texting features.

The Good

  • Unlimited free texting
  • Easy to use
  • Supports group texts

The Bad

  • Custom phone number costs extra
  • A tad slow at times

Texting With the iPod Touch

When you first launch the TextPlus app, you’ll need to create a free account. Once you set your username and password, the next step is to create the phone number that you’ll use to send and receive text messages. If you are willing to spend US$1.99, you can select your own area code and one of five phone numbers. Otherwise, you get a random number and area code.

After that step, TextPlus syncs with your contact list so you can send an automatic message to all your friends with your new texting phone number (you can also skip this step if you want). Then you are ready to start texting! Just keep in mind that iPod touch users must be connected to a WiFi connection in order to use the app.

Sending texts is very easy and -- if you have used the iPhone -- just as simple as the built-in texting feature. One cool thing about TextPlus is that you can send group texts. Just scroll through your contact list, add your chosen recipients, and enter your message.

How TextPlus Works

TextPlus also supports push notifications, so you’ll be notified of new texts even when the app isn’t open. A conversation history is also convenient. I had no problems sending or receiving texts to my TextPlus phone number, and it is nice not to worry about exceeding your plan’s text limit. The push notifications arrived as promised, although the app did load slowly a few times when I went to open a new text. Like most free texting apps, TextPlus contains ads but they are pretty unobtrusive. I’m willing to look at a few ads in exchange for unlimited free texts.

The Bottom Line on TextPlus

TextPlus is a great download for iPod touch users. Not only can you send unlimited text messages, but you can also pick your own phone number if you’re willing to spend a few bucks. The interface is easy to use with no noticeable glitches, and group text functionality is a huge plus. Even iPhone users would benefit from this free app, especially if your plan doesn’t include unlimited texting. It can be a tad slow when loading a new text, but that's forgivable. Overall rating: 4.5 stars out of 5.
