How to Stream Oscar Nominated Movies (2021)

Want to watch an Oscar-nominated movie but missed it in the theater? No worries: You can stream 6 of the 8 Best Picture flicks up for the biggest entertainment award of the year from the comfort of your living room.

A few of the movies up for the top award of Best Picture are not yet available online but will be digitally available and can be preordered in time for you to make your own judgments on Oscar night.

Four are still playing in local theaters, which means they won't be available to stream for several months:

  • Judas and the Black Messiah, the story of Black Panther leader Fred Hampton directed by Shaka King.
  • The Father, based on the play "Le Père" by director Florian Zeller.
  • Minari, the story of an immigrant family who settled in Arkansas during the 1980s by director Lee Isaac Chung.
  • Promising Young Woman, a dark comedy about a vigilante femme fatale directed by Emerald Fennell.

Chicago City Hall in The Trial of the Chicago 7



Directed by David Fincher, Mank tells the story of Herman J. Mankiewicz, writer of Orson Welles's cinematic masterpiece Citizen Kane. A Blu-ray Disc release date has not yet been announced. Who needs those, though, when you can grab a Netflix subscription and watch it now?

The Trial of the Chicago 7

The Trial of the Chicago 7 is a historical drama about a group of anti–Vietnam War protestors who were arrested at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Following a limited theatrical run, it was released directly to Netflix in October 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Riz Ahmed in Sound of Metal


Sound of Metal

Sound of Metal is an emotional story about a heavy metal drummer on the verge of losing his hearing. Directed by Darius Marder in 2019, Sound of Metal didn't get a proper theatrical release until late 2020, which is why it was eligible for the 2021 Oscars.

Nomadland on Hulu



Director Chloé Zhao brings us the screen version of Jessica Bruder's nonfiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century. Many of the characters from the book play themselves in the movie.
