Why does she ignore me?

Google Assistant in Google Maps is great when it works right: The voice tells you exactly where and when to turn, and all you have to do is drive. But when you're done, you're done...and you want her to shut up. Here's how to effectively end voice navigation.

How to Initiate Voice Commands for Google Maps

Each of Google Assistant's tasks is activated with a corresponding voice command, such as “Send text message,” or “Tell me about my day,” or "Set a timer for 10 minutes." It’s handy to be able to perform many of these functions without fiddling with your phone. You can use Google Assistant to stop the voice navigation function when you're using Google Maps.

First, note that before you issue a command, you must say the wake phrase, “OK Google.” When you do this, in the upper-right corner of the navigation screen, the microphone icon will turn into an animated icon of several bars with different colors. When you see it, that means the device is “listening” for your command.

How to Mute Google Assistant but Still See the Map

Once you've initiated voice commands, you can tell the Assistant what you want her to do.

If you just want to stop hearing the voice but you do want to continue seeing the map, say, “Mute voice guidance.” This command will mute the voice component of the navigation function, but you will still see mapped guidance on your screen.

If you want to get voice guidance back, you can say, “Unmute voice guidance.” You’ll see a line appear through the “sound” icon on the screen (for mute) or the line disappear (for unmute).

How to Stop The Navigation Function Completely

If you want to stop the navigation function entirely (that is, stop hearing voice guidance and stop seeing mapped instructions), say any of the following phrases: “Stop navigation,” “Cancel navigation,” or “Exit navigation.”

You’ll be brought back to the Google Maps screen, but will be out of navigation mode.

Keep in mind that other phrases (including certain ones you might be tempted to say when angry at your device) just won’t work, and neither will shouting the phrases louder.

How to Manually Stop Navigation

If your car is stopped and you can safely look at your phone, you can end the navigation function manually by tapping the X in the lower left-hand corner of the screen. Note that you will still be using Google Maps.

You can also stop the navigation by closing out of the Google Maps app entirely.
