Spotify Adds the Ability to Download Music to Apple Watch

Listen anywhere, anytime

Apple Watch users can finally download their Spotify music or podcasts to their smartwatch to listen without their phones nearby.

Spotify announced on Friday that the highly requested offline playback feature is now available to Premium Spotify subscribers who have an Apple Watch. The feature allows you to download playlists, albums, and podcasts directly to your Apple Watch.

Spotify said the offline playback complements the existing feature of streaming music from your watch, only now you don't need to have your phone with you at all.

"It’s perfect for that next run, or for keeping both hands focused while you’re cooking," Spotify wrote in its press release announcing the feature. "Leave your phone behind and still stay connected to the music and podcasts you love."

The feature will become available in the latest Spotify iOS/watch OS release: 8.6.28, according to 9to5Mac. Spotify said users could expect full access to all the features in the coming weeks.

Spotify initially added the ability to stream music on an Apple Watch in November. Before that, you could only use your Apple Watch to pause or play Spotify music that was playing from your iPhone or other connected devices.

Earlier this week, Spotify also announced the offline playback feature will come to Android smartwatches sometime in the future as part of the new Spotify for Wear OS app. The new app also will allow you to switch between listening devices, such as your watch and your smart speaker.
