Sony Unveils STR-ZA5000ES Flagship Receiver

Following up the announcement of its mid-range "60-series" home theater reciever line-up earlier in 2015, Sony has announced an addition of a new high-end ES-series receiver, the STR-ZA5000ES, at the 2015 CEDIA EXPO, which is optimized for custom-installed home theater setups, and also marks Sony's first home theater receivier that is Dolby Atmos and DTS:X-enabled.

The Amplifiers and Speaker Support

The STR-ZA5000ES provides up to a 9.2 Channel configuration (130wpc at 8 ohms, 1 kHz, THD 0.9%, 2-channels driven). In addition, an 11.1 channel configuration is possible with the addition of an additional amplifier(s).

Video Connection Support

STR-ZA5000ES provides 5 3D and 4K Pass-through HDMI inputs and two HDMI outputs (all with HDMI ver 2.0, HDCP 2.2, and matrix switching support), and 2 Component Video Inputs.

1080p and 4K upscaling are both supported.

Audio Connectivity Options

Along with audio connectivity via HDMI, additional audio connection options include Digital (2 Optical, 1 Coaxial), several sets of analog stereo inputs (although no dedicated phono inputs), and 2nd and 3rd Zone Preamp Audio Outputs, as well as a powered Zone 2 option (via assignable surround back or height speaker terminals - which can be assigned to height or Zone 2 functionality).

5.1/7.1 channel preamp outputs are provided (in addition to the 2 subwoofer preamp outputs). However, no 5.1/7.1 multi-channel audio inputs provided.

Audio Decoding, Processing, And Multi-Zone Options

Dolby and DTS multi-format decoding and processing as well as the addition this year of both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio decoding capability.

For Dolby Atmos, the STR-Z5000ES can internally support a 7.1.2 channel configuration, or 5.1.2 channels, while running a separate powered two channel Zone 2 system at the same time. With the addition of two external channels of amplification, the receiver can support up to a 7.1.4 channel configuration, or a 7.1.2 channel configuration while running a separate powered two channel Zone 2 system at the same time.

Users also have the option of operating a full 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos configuration using internal and external amplifiers and still have the ability to operate two-channel Zone 2 and Zone 3 systems using the external amplifiers connected to the STR-Z5000ES Zone 2 and Zone 3 preamp outputs.

Also, Sony Digital Cinema Sound Processing is included, as well as In-ceiling speaker adjustment settings.

Custom Control Options

In addition to the provided remote and comprehensive onboard control options, additional custom install-friendly control features of the STR-ZA5000ES include full compatibility with several 3rd party control systems (AMX/Crestron), 3 12-volt triggers, 3 IR repeater connections, RS232C port, IP Control Integration. Also, STR-ZA5000ES can accept firmware updates via USB.

Also, an 8-port Ethernet Hub, including 2 POE (Power Over Ethernet) ports, is included for connection of additional networked devices.

However, it is important to mention that the STR-ZA5000ES, is not equipped with either Wifi or Bluetooth - All streaming, and network content access and control is provided by external devices connected using the above mentioned 8-port ethernet hub, or other audio/video input options.

The STR-ZA5000ES is priced at $2,799.99 and should be arriving at selected Sony ES dealers and custom installers early in 2016.
