The Sony STR-DN1040 is an affordably-priced Home Theater Receiver from Sony that builds on their previous STR-DN1030 by offering a new physical design, improved onscreen menu interface, and adds MHL connectivity, along with 1080p and 4K video upscaling. Check out a close-up look at the features and connections of this receiver by proceeding through this photo profile.

The Unit as Packaged

To get started, here is a photo of the Sony STR-DN1040 Home Theater Receiver and the accessories that come packaged with it.

Starting along the back are the power cord, English and French version of user manuals, and remote control. Moving forward, on the left side are the warranty documentation, product registration sheet, Quick Start Guide, Digital Cinema Auto Calibration Microphone, AM and FM radio antennas.

Here is a look at the STR-DN1040 as viewed from the Front.

Running across the entire front is the panel display and function buttons and controls. Although hard to see in this photo, the function access buttons that run along the bottom of the LED status display, from left to right are:

  • Speakers A/B, Tuning Mode (AM/FM), Tuning Scan
  • A.F.D/2CH (Auto-Format Direct) - provides surround sound listening or multi-speaker stereo from 2-channel sources.
  • Movie Mode Presets: HD-D.C.S. (Digital Cinema Sound - extra ambience is added to surround signals for a more immersive sound), Dolby Movie ProLogicII, IIx, IIz, DTS Neo:6).
  • Music Mode Presets: Provides a selection of preset surround modes optimized to enhance music sources, such as Berlin Philharmonic Hall, Concertgeb Amsterdam, Musicverei Vienna, Jazz Club, Live Concert, Stadium, Sports, Portable Audio, Dolby Music ProLogic II, IIx, IIz, DTS Neo:6 Music).
  • Sound Optimizer: Enhances sound quality a low volume levels.
  • Bluetooth connection/pairing.
  • Dimmer: Adjusts the brightness of the front panel display.
  • Display: Changes what information is displayed on the front panel.
  • Pure Direct: Provides direct pass-through of incoming audio signals with no additional audio processing by the STR-DN1040.

Continuing down on the front panel, and starting on the left side is the Power/Standby buttons and headphone output, followed by Digital Cinema Auto Calibration Microphone input, USB port, and HDMI/MHL input.

Moving to the far right side are two rotary dials. The smaller of the two is the Input Selector, and the larger one is the Master Volume Control.

Here is a photo of the entire rear connection panel of the STR-DN1040. As you can see, the Audio and Video input and output connections are located on the left side and the speaker connections connections are located more towards the bottom center/right. Also, the WiFi/Bluetooth antenna, as well as the power cord, are located on the right side of the rear panel.

Here is a closer look at the connection running across the top of the Sony STR-DN1040's rear connection panel.

Along the very top row are the AM/FM radio antenna connections (Indoor AM and FM antennas are provided), followed on the right by the wired IR remote in/out extender connections (for remote control link with compatible devices).

Moving down to the bottom row (in this photo), on the far left is a Digital Coaxial audio input connection, follwow by seven HDMI inputs and two parallel HDMI outputs. All HDMI inputs and outputs are 3D-pass through and 4K pass-through/upscaling capable, and one of the HDMI outputs is Audio Return Channel-enabled (ARC) .

Finally, on the right, in this photo, is an Ethernet/LAN connects (the 1040 also has built-in Wifi if you would rather use that connection option for network and internet streaming).

Here is a photo of the AV connections on the rear panel of the STR-DN1040 located on the left.

Starting on the left side are two Digital Optical inputs.

Moving right are two sets of Component Video (red, green, blue) inputs, followed by a set of component video outputs.

Just to the right of the component video connections are the Composite (yellow) video inputs and outputs.

Moving down to the final section are the analog stereo inputs and outputs, a set of Zone 2 preamp outputs, and dual subwoofer preamp outputs.

It must be noted that there are no 5.1/7.1 analog audio inputs or outputs and there is also no provision for direct connection of a Turntable for playing Vinyl Records. You cannot use the analog audio inputs to connect a turntable due to the fact that the impedance and output voltage of the turntable cartridge is different than for other types of audio components.

If you desire to connect a turntable to the STR-DN1040, you can either employ an additional Phono Preamp or buy a one of the breed of turntables have built-in phono preamps that will work with the audio connections provided on the STR-DN1040.

Here is a look at the speaker connections provided on the STR-DN1040, located on the bottom center/ride side of the rear panel.

Speaker Setups

Here are some of the speaker setups that can be used:

  1. If you want to use a full traditional 7.1/7.2 Channel setup, you can use the Front, Center, Surround, and Surround Back connections.
  2. If you want to have the STR-DN1040 in a Bi-Amp setup for your front left and right speakers, you re-assign the surround back speaker connections for Bi-Amp operation.
  3. If you want to have an extra set of front left and right "B" speakers, you re-assign the surround back speaker connections to your intended "B" speakers.
  4. If you want to have the STR-DN1040 power vertical height channels, you can use the Front, Center, and Surround connections to power 5 channels and reassign the surround back speaker connections to connect to the two intended vertical height channel speakers.

For each physical speaker setup options, you will also need to use the speaker menu options of the receiver to send the correct signal information to the speaker terminals, based on what speaker configuration option you are utilizing. You also have to remember that you cannot use all the available options at the same time.

Here is a look at the inside of the STR-DN1040, as viewed from above and the front. Without going into detail, you can see the power supply, with its transformer, on the left, and along the back is the WiFi/Bluetooth board, and all of the amplifier, sound, and video processing circuitry packed into space on the back right. The large silver structure along the front are the heat sinks. The heat sinks are very effective as they keep the STR-DN1040 relatively cool with used for an extended period. However, it is always advisable to make sure you have a few inches of open space on the sides, top, and rear of the receiver for good air circulation.

Here is a look at the inside of the STR-DN1040, in an opposite view from above and rear of the receiver. In this photo the power supply, with its transformer, is located on the right, and all of the amplifier, sound, and video processing circuitry packed oins on the left. The black squares exposed are some of the audio/video processing and control chips. Also, just to the right of the audio/video processing board is the WiFi/Bluetooth board. At this angle, you also have a clearer view of the heat sinks and metal separater between the heat sinks and front panel display and controls.

Here is a look at remote control provided with the Sony STR-DN1040 Home Theater Receiver.

As you can see, this is an long and thin remote. It fits well in our hand, but it is large, coming in at just slightly over 10-inches in length.

On the top row are the Pure Direct (bypasses all internal audio processing), Remote Setup Button (allows remote to be used other compatible devices), AV1 Power (this button controls the power on/off for a compatible connected device), and main Power Button.

Moving to the second row at the TV, Zone, AMP (allows the remote control functions to operate the STR-DN1040), and Sleep Timer/TV Input Buttons.

The next section contains the input select, followed by the numeric keypad buttons.

Moving to the center section of the remote are the menu access and navigation buttons. In order to display the onscreen menu, press the blue HOME Button.

The next section just below the menu access and navigation buttons are the transport buttons. These buttons also double and navigation buttons for iPod and digital media playback, as well as activating Sony's Party Streaming Mode with compatible Sony Homeshare products.

On the bottom of the remote are the volume and sound field selection controls as well as additional buttons for iPhone control access, HDMI preview (displays thumbnail images of all active HDMI input sources), Top and Pop Up Menu for Blu-ray Disc and DVD playback.

Here is a look at the Settings Menu.

  • Easy Setup - Instead of going through all the manual settings, easy setup take users through an automated short-cut setup procedure.
  • Speaker - Provides all setting options related to speaker setup, including the type calibration (preset or auto), Auto Phase Matching (digitally matches phase of all speakers), Speaker Connection (allows user to tell the receiver what type of speaker setup is being used: 2 channel, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1, Bi-Amp, etc...), Level/Distance/Size (allows manual setting of output level, distance, and size of each speaker in a setup), Crossover Frequency, Test Tone (generates an audible test tone that can be used to calibrate the speaker setup - can be use manual or automatically), Center Speaker Lift-up (If using the Dolby ProLogic IIz speaker setup - you can tell the receiver to "lift" the center channel dialog or vocal track into the front height speakers for added emphasis), Distance Unit (allows users to display speaker distances in either feet or meters).
  • Audio - Provides several audio setting options including the activation of Digital Legato Linear (enhances low quality audio source material), Sound Optimizer, Equalizer, Sound Field, A/V Synch, Advanced Auto Volume, Dual Mono (works with Dolby Digital TV broadcasts that also contain an alternate language track in addition the main sound tracks), Dynamic Range Compression.
  • HDMI - Provides setting options for HDMI functions, including the activation of 4K upscaling, HDMI control (HDMI-CEC/Bravia Link), Pass-Through On/Off, HDMI Audio Out configuration, Subwoofer Level (when audio signals are input in PCM format), Fast View (HDMI input switching speed).
  • Input - Provides options for naming and reassigning all available inputs.
  • Network - Sets up the wired or wireless network connection options, as well as setting up the Party Streaming functions.
  • System - Allows the setting of the menu display Language, Auto Standby preferences, Software Update notification, System Information, and Network Update activation (when available).
