Here is a look at the rear panel connections of the SONY BDP-S790.

Starting on the left is the Ethernet (LAN) port. The ethernet port allows connection to a high-speed internet router for access to Profile 2.0 (BD-Live) content associated with some Blu-ray Discs, as well as access to internet streaming content (such as Netflix, etc...), and direct download of firmware updates. The BDP-S790 is also equipped to with built-in WiFi that can be used in leiu of the Ethernet connection.

Moving right is rear mounted USB port for plug in of additional USB flash drive or other compatible devices.

Continuing to the right are two HDMI outputs. Both HDMI connections allow access to 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 4K upscaled images from standard commercial DVDs and internet streamed content in addition to 2D/3D Blu-ray content.

In addition, the Sony BDP-S790 incorporates an "AV Separation" function that allows to output video only from HDMI OUT 1 and audio only from HDMI OUT 2. This comes in handy if you have a 3D TV, but a non-3D compatible home theater receiver. In this situation, you can connect the HDMI OUT 1 directly to the TV for video and connect HDMI OUT 2 to a home theater receiver to access audio.

Continuing to the right is a Composite video output (yellow) and a set of two-channel stereo analog audio outputs (red, white).

Next is both a Digital Coaxial and Digital Optical audio output.

Finally, on the right, is the cooling fan. Make sure you have enough space on your shelf or rack for air to circulate.

Although the BDP-S790 appears to have flexible connection options, it is important to point out that it does not have any Component Video (red, green, blue), In order to use this player, your TV or home theater must have HDMI or composite video inputs. However, high definition can only be accessed via HDMI.

Shown here is the Audio Settings menu for the Sony BDP-S790 Blu-ray Disc Player.

Audio (HDMI): Auto setting automatically sends Dolby or DTS bitstream or PCM signals from the player to the receiver. The PCM setting tells the BDP-S790 to decode all Dolby and DTS signals internally and output the decoded signals as PCM to the connected receiver.

DSD Output Mode: Setting the HDMI audio output setting when playing SACDs. If set to DSD, the native DSD SACD signal is output, is set to Off, DSD signals are converted to PCM output.

BD Audio MIX Setting: Allows users to select between the primary audio stream or a mix of the primary and secondary (may include audio commentary) audio streams from a Blu-ray Disc

Dolby Digital/DTS: Allows selection between bitstream and PCM audio output when using digital optical or digital coaxial audio output.

DTS Neo:6: Outputs DTS Neo:6 processed suround from two channel source content when using the HDMI output connection.

Audio DRC: The Dynamic Range Compression control allows setting the ratio between soft and loud sounds. This option is very practical if want to avoid extreme volume changes (such as explosions and crashes) this setting evens out the volume between loud and soft parts of a soundtrack you don't have to "ride the volume control".

Downmix: This option provides a way to mix the audio output into fewer channels, which is useful if you are using the two channel analog audio output option. If set to Stereo mixes down all surround sound signals to two-channel stereo. If set to Surround, the surround sound signals are still mixed down to two channels, but retain the imbedded surround sound cues so that home theater receivers using Dolby Prologic, Prologic II, or Prologic IIx can extract a surround sound image from the two channel information.
