This easy to use, and completely free software updater, is brilliantly named... Software Updater!

Software Updater cross-references your installed programs with the collection of programs on Software Updater's website to find which ones need an update.

This program updater doesn't have a user interface at all, which makes it super simple to use.

This review is of Software Updater version 1.1. Please let me know if there's a newer version I need to review.

More About Software Updater

  • Software Updater officially supports Windows 10 down through Windows XP
  • Because there's no interface, you just need to start the program to have it check for outdated software, after which the list of updates will show up on Software Updater's website
  • A list of your installed programs that are already up-to-date will also show up alongside the outdated programs
  • Choosing any of your programs that Software Updater finds will give you more information about it, as well as reviews by other users

Software Updater Pros & Cons

Although it certainly works as advertised, Software Updater isn't quite as advanced as most of its competitors:

  • Scans in just a few seconds
  • Very easy to use
  • Doesn't need to be installed (it's portable)
  • Shows both the current version and the version of the update
  • Takes up less than 1 MB of storage space

  • Can't check for updates on a schedule (must do it manually)
  • Must download updates individually (no bulk downloads)
  • Must download updates manually from your web browser (there aren't in-program downloads)
  • Updates are not installed for you (must do it manually)
  • Doesn't support as many programs as similar updater tools

My Thoughts on Software Updater

Software Updater is very simple. It works without installation from devices like flash drives, and starts scanning your computer immediately after you start it. However, even though it's simple and effective, I really don't think it's as good as similar free updaters.

Most software updater tools like Software Updater will let you decide if you want to find beta updates, will let you check for outdated programs on a schedule, and may even download and install the updates for you. But these types of features are not included in this particular program.

That being said, you don't have to do much of anything with Software Updater but download and open the small client program and then click on the download links for the programs that need updated. So in the simplicity contest, Software Updater may just win.
