SoftPerfect File Recovery v1.2

A Full Review of SoftPerfect File Recovery, a Free Data Recovery Tool

SoftPerfect File Recovery is an ideal program for recovering deleted files from your computer.

It's very lightweight (not too big), completely free, doesn't require installation, and isn't bogged down with unnecessary settings and screens.

My Thoughts on SoftPerfect File Recovery

If you're looking for a free, easy to use tool to recovery some files you've deleted, SoftPerfect File Recovery won't disappoint. However, there are some things included in similar free data recovery programs that you won't find in this one.

For example, an important feature I look for is whether the program tells you the general condition of the file you're looking to restore, sometimes referred to as the "health" of the file.

If the file is corrupted or partially overwritten, and thus likely unusable, there's really no reason to restore it. Unfortunately, SoftPerfect File Recovery won't help you identify those types of files. For this feature, you'll need a program like the free Puran File Recovery.

Though not as big of a concern since the file name is shown in the results, it's sometimes nice to be able to preview a file, like an image, before you restore it so you know that it's the one you really want back. SoftPerfect File Recovery doesn't do this which means you may find yourself restoring several files before getting the one you want.

On the upside, though, the program doesn't need to be installed to your computer, which means it won't overwrite the files you're trying to restore. Also, it won't even let you restore a file to the same disk that you're restoring it from. This means so long as you run the program from a different place, like a flash drive, and restore the files to that same flash drive, the act of using SoftPerfect File Recovery won't interrupt the process of undeleting your files.

Also, before you run a scan, you can enter the name or extension of the file that you're looking for. This is an extremely helpful feature...otherwise you'd be sifting through hundreds or thousands or files to uncover the one you need.
