There are a few different ways to find the Sims registration code (i.e. product key or serial code) that you used when you first installed the Sims game. You might need it if you uninstalled the game or lost the game case.

Don't expect these methods to work like a keygen program; they won't let you get an illegal product key for an illegitimate copy of the game. This guide is only useful if you've already used the code in the past but have since forgotten it.

Remember to never give out your registration code and to store it somewhere safe in case you ever need it again.

How to Find Your Sims Key

  1. If you registered your game on The Sims website, you can check your profile for the keys.

  2. Download a free product key finder or use a commercial product if the free ones don't work. Most of these programs let you copy or export the key so you can save it elsewhere if you ever need it again in the future.

  3. Check the Windows Registry for the code but be careful not to make unnecessary changes, which could wreak havoc on your computer. See how to open Windows Registry if you need help.

For The Sims, try looking in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Electronic Arts\Maxis\The Sims\ergc\. If you need the key for a different game like The Sims: Livin' Large or House Party, replace the registry key named "The Sims" with the right one, such as "The Sims Livin' Large" or "The Sims House Party."

On the right side, look for a value called Default or data. Double-click it to see the registration key.

  4. For macOS users, enter the following command in Terminal (accessible through Finder > Utilities > Terminal):

    cat Library/Preferences/The\ Sims\ 3\ Preferences/system.reg |grep -A1 ergc
  5. If you're using the Origin game platform, go into My Games and right-click the Sims game icon. Choose View Game Details to find the code under the Product Code section.

  6. If all else fails, contact Electronic Arts about a serial replacement.

Safely Storing Serial Numbers

After you find the product key, it's highly recommended to store it somewhere safe in case you'll ever need it again. Here are some tips:

  • Store it in a program built for such, like a password manager.
  • Make a simple text file on your computer or flash drive and keep the key there
  • Put the serial key in a notes application on your phone or computer
  • Write the key directly on the CD
  • Write it in the manual
  • Send an email to yourself with the key. This is especially useful if you use web-based email so that in case of an emergency, you'll be able to easily search for and retrieve it
