One of the most common questions I get is about the "cheat gnome" in "The Sims 2"—what it looks like and how to use it.

What it looks like is pictured here (this image was taken from the Xbox version of "The Sims 2," and the cheat gnome will look similar in any version). This is sometimes referred to as the "plumbob trophy" because it appears as a trophy (which looks like a sculpture) with a plumbob above it.

In "The Sims" games, "plumbob" refers to the diamond shaped indicator that appears above the head of the selected character or target. In the case of characters, the color of the plumbob reflects the mood of that character.

Activating the Cheat Gnome

In "The Sims 2" there is a master code, or cheat gnome code as it is sometimes referred to. You will need to enter this code to activate the cheat gnome.

For the PS2, pause the game and enter L1, R1, Up, X, R2. On the GameCube the code is L, R, Up, A and Z.

Important note: You will need to activate the gnome before any of the cheats will work. After entering the cheat gnome activation code, the gnome will appear on your Sims front lawn.

Enabling Cheats on Your Gnome

Next, enter the "The Sims 2" cheats that you want to use, such as Max All Motives, etc. This will unlock the cheats and make them available on your cheat gnome. Successful activation of each code will be accompanied by the sound of a sigh from your Sim.

After entering your cheat codes, approach the gnome, select it and simply activate the cheats that you just entered.

Here are some of The Sims 2 cheats pages, more can be found by looking in the appropriate cheat code index.
