Shop Nearby by TheFind App Review

This app is no longer available in the App Store (as of Aug. 2016).

The Good

  • Plentiful listings in many cases
  • Phone numbers and maps for nearby stores
  • Free

The Bad

  • Search results are cluttered
  • No price alerts
  • Few features

How annoying is it to have to waste time driving to several different stores to locate a hard-to-find item? The free Shop Nearby app by TheFind, saves you time and annoyance by offering an easier way of locating products at nearby stores.

The app has a few areas in which it can improve, but it does a better job helping you find the things you're looking for than some of its competitors.

Accurate Store Listings, but Cluttered Results

Shop Nearby by TheFind is very simple to use—just type the name of the product you're trying to find into the search bar and the app will find it at stores near you (based off data from your iPhone’s GPS). After searching, you’ll see the prices for the product at stores in your area. In my first test, I used the app to see where I could buy an iPod touch near me. The app told me it was available at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, RadioShack. This wasn't too surprising, but a helpful "sale" icon next to Wal-Mart’s listing pointed me in the direction of a deal.

While the listings are abundant and informative, the search results could be better organized. As I found with the Shop.com app, listings for the fourth-generation iPod touch were mixed together with those for iPod nanos and earlier models of the iPod touch.

There were also some accessories like iPod touch cases thrown in for good measure. Some users may like seeing earlier generations or iPod accessories in their search results, but I’m not one of them—the results look too cluttered, which makes it difficult to compare prices. Results tailored more tightly to my specific search would deliver a better, more efficient experience.

Once you find a product, the detail page for the product includes information like the address of the store selling the product and a phone number for that store that you can call just by tapping on it from the app. Maps are also available, which are useful if you're shopping away from home or need to get directions.

Besides shopping at bricks and mortar stores near you, you can also use TheFind to compare prices online by tapping on the "Web Items" tab. The search results for shopping on the web still suffer from the same organizational problems as the retail results, but making your search term as specific as possible is one method you can use to try to cut out some of the clutter.

The Bottom Line

Shop Nearby by TheFind is a good effort, but it's not completely successful. Although it does a better job of comparing prices and identifying nearby stores than the Shop.com app, the search results are still a little too disorganized to be really helpful. I would also like to see more features, including the ability to save favorite items to a wish or shopping list or set up price alerts that let me know when the products I'm looking for are available in my desired price range. I guess I can’t be too choosy with a free app, but TheFind still needs some improvements to become an everyday app.

Overall rating: 3 stars out of 5.

What You’ll Need
