  • Enter your screen name and password into the fields provided. If you don't have any AIM login, click on "Get an AIM Account" to sign up for an account.
  • Click on the pencil icon, to start a new web chat, or the mobile phone icon, to send an SMS message. Both icons are located at the top of the contact list shown on the right side of your screen.
  • Enter the email address, username or phone number of the person you'd like to start a web chat with — or enter the phone number that you'd like to send an SMS to, depending on which option you have chosen.
  • Once you've entered a person's name or contact information, the paper clip icon at the bottom of the screen will be activated. Clicking on it will bring up a directory of all of the files on your computer. Select the file that you'd like to send, and click the "Choose" button. Repeat the process if you'd like to select multiple files.
  • As soon as you click the "Choose" button, the file you selected will be sent to your friend. Be sure to select the right file because you won't have the chance to stop it from being sent once you hit the "Choose" button.
  • Tip: On the other side of the message field — directly across from the paper clip icon, you'll see a couple of options. One option is the icon with the letter "A" on it. Click on this to access options for formatting the text of your message. The other option is the icon with the smiley face on it. Click this option to access a wide variety of emoticons that you can use to liven up your message.
