Many websites display their contact email addresses as mailto: links, causing your default mail client or web-based email service to launch whenever they are clicked on. This makes it easy to compose an email to the address in question with just a single mouse click.

If you’re a Firefox user with a Gmail account, you can modify the browser’s settings so that it automatically goes to your default configuration whenever a mailto: link is selected.

The instructions below are applicable to the Firefox web browser on macOS and Windows operating systems.

Set Up Gmail as Your Default Email in Firefox for macOS

  1. Open your Firefox browser.

  2. Click the main menu button, represented by three horizontal lines and located in the upper right corner of your browser window. When the drop-down menu appears, select Preferences. You can also enter the following text in Firefox’s address bar instead of clicking on this menu item about:preferences

    The Firefox General Preferences interface.
  3. Firefox’s General Preferences should now be displayed. Scroll down until the Applications section is visible.
