The service offers both an individual and family subscription, the latter of which allows up to six people to share a single subscription. Google Play Music is being phased out in favor of YouTube Music, and will likely go away at the end of 2020. The company is making it easy to transfer playlists and music from Google Play Music to YouTube Music. What Is the Google Play Music Family Plan? As of March 2020, a Google Play Music family plan costs $14.99 per month and lets up to six members of the same household stream millions of tracks from their own accounts. By comparison, an individual Google Play Music membership costs $9.99 per month and is linked to one Google account. All Google Play Music family plan members have their own music libraries and playlists. For both individual and family plans, users can opt to use Google Play Music (which includes support for uploading personal music libraries) or YouTube Music, which includes music videos and more. Both services have standalone apps that also offer offline listening for premium subscribers. Additionally, each user can link up to 10 devices to their account, but each account can play music from only one device at a time. To set up a Google Play Music Family Plan, you must first set up a Google family Here's how. If you haven't already, sign into your primary Google account on a desktop browser. This will be the account that oversees the family plan and all associated services, including Google Play Music. A family plan requires a standard Google account. You can't create a family group using a G Suite account. Navigate to families.google.com/families. Select Get started. You will see your Google account is listed as the family manager. Select Create family group to continue. Select Invite family member. To invite someone, enter their name or Gmail address, then select Send. The form will autofill based on your Google Contacts. Additionally, you can search through the suggested contacts. The recipient will receive an email notifying them they've received an invite to your family group. They'll be prompted to follow a few steps to complete the process. Repeat steps 5 to 7 for all of the family members you want to add (up to five). That's it! You're now ready to set up your Google Play Music family plan. How to Switch From an Individual Google Play Music Plan to a Family Plan If you are already subscribed to an individual Google Play Music plan, moving to a family plan is straightforward. Individual Google Play Music subscribers who have YouTube Premium (formerly YouTube Red) will lose access to this service if they migrate to the Google Play Music family plan, but they'll still have access to YouTube Music Premium. Users who want Google Play Music, YouTube Music Premium, and YouTube Premium should first cancel Google Play Music, then sign up for a YouTube Premium family plan. If you haven't already, sign in to the Google account that oversees your family group via a desktop browser. This should be the same account subscribed to Google Play Music. If it isn't, you'll need to cancel your existing Google Play Music service and set up a new one under the main account that oversees your Google family plan. Navigate to play.google.com/music/listen. Select the hamburger menu in the top left corner. Select Settings. From here, select Upgrade to Family Plan and follow the steps to approve your account changes. You're now on the Google Play Music family plan. How to Sign up for a New Google Play Music Family Plan Account If you don't already have a paid Google Play Music or YouTube Music account, you can sign up for a Google Play Music family plan in just a few steps. If you haven't already, establish a Google family plan as explained above. In a desktop browser, navigate to play.google.com/music/listen. If necessary, sign into the main Google account. This should be the same account that manages the family group. Select the hamburger menu in the top left corner. Select Subscribe Now. Select the family plan and follow the onscreen steps to complete payment details. Once finished, you'll see information relating to your new plan, including your monthly cost and the payment schedule. Signing up for a Google Play Music family plan also gets you into Google’s broader family sharing program. All Google accounts associated with the plan will also have automatic access to members' Google Play purchases and services like YouTube TV. These sharing settings can be adjusted from the Families website.
