This article explains how to set up parental controls in Disney Plus, a family-friendly streaming service. How to Set Disney Plus Parental Controls On an Existing Profile If you already have a profile you have designated for one of your kids, or for all of your kids to share, switching it to a child's profile is pretty easy. By doing so, you will limit the type of content that can be viewed via that profile. Launch the Disney Plus app and log in if necessary. In the bottom right corner of the screen, tap the small profile icon. Tap Edit Profiles. Tap your child's profile. Tap the Kids Profile toggle switch. Tap Save. This profile is now set as a child's profile. How to Create a Child Profile On Disney Plus If you don't already have a profile set up for your kid, you can also create a child profile from scratch. You can make one for each of the children who will use your Disney Plus account, or a single child account for them to share. Launch the Disney Plus app and sign in if necessary. In the bottom right corner of the screen, tap the small profile icon. Tap Edit Profiles. Tap Add Profile. Choose an icon for the new profile. Enter a name for the profile. Tap the Kids Profile toggle switch. Tap Save. Your kids will now be able to use this profile to view child-appropriate content. How Do Disney Plus Parental Controls Work? Disney Plus parental controls are easy to access, but they aren't as robust as those offered by other streaming services. Each user of the app can have their own profile, and you can toggle any profile to only have access to child-appropriate content. Issues With Disney Plus Parental Controls The two potential issues with the parental controls provided by Disney Plus are you have no fine control over the content your kids have access to, and there is no system in place to keep your kids from simply switching over to an adult profile. Some streaming services allow you to set specific restrictions or provide a number of options for different age ranges. For example, YouTube Kids includes options for preschool-aged children, early grade school-aged children, and middle school-aged children. Disney Plus only provides the simple toggle between a regular profile and a child profile. Child profiles are limited to G-rated movies and television rated TV-Y, TV-Y7/Y7-FV, and TV-G. Additionally, some streaming services allow you to set a personal identification number (PIN). If your kid tries to switch to an adult profile on one of these services, they find they can't do so without knowing the PIN. Disney Plus does not have any such system in place. Instead, you have to rely on an honor system and trust your kids won't switch to an adult profile. Is Disney Plus Safe for Kids? While the parental controls are fairly basic, Disney Plus is unique in it is designed to be family friendly in terms of the content available on the service. There is no rated R content, and the content on the service maxes out at PG-13 and TV14. That makes the service pretty safe for teens, but a younger child may end up finding content that's too scary, or you might find inappropriate, if they manually change profiles when you aren't looking.
