What to Know

  • Mac: Open FaceTime and then Screenshot app. Click Record Selected Portion, resize the Screenshot tool to capture the FaceTime window, and hit Record. Place your FaceTime call.

This article explains how to record a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The instructions support iOS 11 or later, iPadOS, and macOS Mojave or later.

Record a FaceTime Call on iPhone and iPad

As with many things Apple, the process for recording a FaceTime call is the same on iPhone and iPad. So although the screenshots below display iPhone, you can follow the same steps on your iPad.

  1. Open the iPhone Control Center to access the built-in screen recording tool.

  2. Tap the Screen Record button. This starts a three-second countdown giving you time to close the Control Center and open FaceTime.

To speed up the process, you can open FaceTime first and have it ready to place the call and then open Control Center and tap the screen record button.

  3. Place your call in the FaceTime app.

    Note

Be aware that the screen recording tool captures everything on your screen from the time the three-second countdown ends until you stop the recording.

  4. To stop the recording, tap the red status bar at the top of your device screen.

  5. You’ll be asked to confirm that you want to stop recording. Tap Stop. The recording is then saved to your Photo Library.

Tip

If you want to edit the video you capture after your call to remove the opening of FaceTime and connecting to your pal, you can do so.

Can You Screen Record FaceTime With Sound?

Even though the screen recording tool on iPhone and iPad does offer a microphone feature, it will not record the audio for a FaceTime call.

You’ll notice that if you do enable the microphone for the screen recorder and place your call, only the video will record. You will not hear any sounds in your recording except for those taking place on your device before and after the FaceTime call.

Can You Screen Record a Video With Sound?

You can record a video call with sound if you use an app such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet. These services may be intended for meetings, but you can join a video call with anyone you like.

If you’re a Mac user, you can record a FaceTime call on your computer. And although you cannot record a FaceTime call with sound on iPhone and iPad, you can on Mac (as of this writing).

  1. Open FaceTime on Mac so that you can capture the window with the screen recording tool.

  2. Press Command+Shift+5 on your keyboard to open the Screenshot app. This tool is available with macOS Mojave and later. If you’re using an earlier version of macOS, you can use the QuickTime app to record your FaceTime call.

  3. With the Screenshot app interface on your screen, click Record Selected Portion. This allows you to capture the FaceTime window specifically.

If you prefer to capture your entire screen instead, select Record Entire Screen.
