The Samsung UN55HU8550 is a 55-inch 4K UHD 3D-capable LCD TV that features an LED-edge-lit panel and a stylish edge-to-edge screen design. The set provides all the connectivity you need to plug in your Blu-ray Disc player, cable, and/or satellite box.

Also using either a wired Ethernet connection or convenient WiFi, the UN55HU8550 provides access to Netflix and other internet streaming services provided by the Samsung Apps platform, as well as content stored on your PC or compatible media server. You can even make video phone calls via Skype (optional camera required), or browse the web using either the provided remotes or by plugging in a standard USB Windows Keyboard.

As a supplement to my review of the UN55HU8550, I have compiled a photo profile to provide readers with more information on its features, connections, and onscreen menu system.

To start with this photo, look at the Samsung UN55HU8550 LED/LCD 4K UHD TV is a front view of the set. The TV is shown here with an actual image (one of the 1080p test images available on the Spears & Munsil HD Benchmark Disc 2nd Edition - The image is upscaled from 1080p to 4K for screen display). The photo has been brightness and contrast adjusted in order to make the TV's edge-to-edge black bezel design more visible for this photo presentation.

The detachable power cord and stand parts are not included in the photo as they were assembled and fitted to the TV before this photo was taken.

NOTE: The UHD Video Pack was included for review purposes - It does require a separate purchase.

Samsung UN55HU8550 LED/LCD 4K UHD TV - Connections

Here is a look at the connections on the UN55HU8550.

The connections are arranged in both vertical and horizontal groups on the rear of the TV (when facing the screen).

Starting on the top left of the side facing connections, and moving down, the first three connections are three USB inputs. These are used for accessing audio, video, and still image files on USB flash drives, as well as allowing the connection of a USB Windows Keyboard.

Just below the USB inputs is the Samsung One Connect port. This port is provided for further hardware updating using an external Samsung Evolution Kit (see example for more details).

Next is a Digital Optical audio output for connection of the TV to an external audio system. Many HDTV programs contain Dolby Digital soundtracks than can take advantage of this connection.

Continuing down the left side are three HDMI inputs. These inputs allow the connection of an HDMI or DVI source (such as an HD-Cable or HD-Satellite Box, Upscaling DVD, or Blu-ray Disc Player). It is also important to note the HDMI 3 is MHL-enabled.

Below the side facing HDMI inputs is the Ant/Cable RF input connection for receiving over-the-air HDTV or unscrambled digital cable signals.

Moving to the rear facing connections, on the first vertical row is a fourth HDMI Input (which is Audio Return Channel (ARC) enabled), IR sensor cable connection, and a 3.5mm analog audio output connection (this can be used to plug-in a set of headphones or to connect to an external audio system (optional 3.5mm to 1/4-inch headphone or RCA adapter may be required). Just to the right of the Audio Out is a Samsung EX-Link connection. Ex-Link is an RS232 compatible data port that allows control commands between the TV and other compatible devices - such as PC.

Moving to the right is a wired LAN (Ethernet) connection. It is also important to note that the UN55HU8550 has built-in Wifi, but if you don't have access to a Wireless router or your wireless connection is unstable, you can connect an Ethernet cable to the LAN port for connection to a home and the internet.

Just below the LAN connection is a set of analog AV input (AV in 2) connections.

Finally, on the right side vertical row is a set of shared Component (Green, Blue, Red) and Composite Video inputs, along with associated analog stereo audio inputs. It is important to note that these inputs are provided for connecting both a composite and component video source. Since this group of inputs is shared, you cannot connect both a component and composite AV source into the TV using these input at the same time. For more details, read my reference article: Shared AV Connections - What You Need To Know.

Samsung UN55HU8550 4K UHD TV - Onboard Control w/On Screen Navigation Menu

Samsung UN55HU8550 LED/LCD 4K UHD TV - Photo - Onboard Control

On this page is a look at the onboard control system provided on the Samsung UN55HU8550. The onboard control system consists of a single toggle button that performs the major control functions for on the TV.

On the left side is a photo of the actual toggle control and on the right is a look at its associated onscreen menu. To turn the TV on, you simply push the toggle button. The control icons are as follows: Center (power on/off), Left Side (TV settings), Right Side (Source/Input Select), Bottom (Power Off), Return (Returns to the previous function).

On the one hand, having a single toggle control does cut down on the number of buttons, but since the toggle is located on the back of the TV (near the side bezel), you have to reach behind the TV slightly to use it while at the same time leaning out so you can see the menu navigation screen from the front of the TV....Kind of awkward, but it does work.

Here is a look at the main page of the On TV Page of Smart Hub Menu.

This page gives you an overview of what is available to watch on over-the-air/cable/satellite TV (depending on which TV signal access option you are using).

The large image on the top left displays what you are watching live, and the remaining thumbnail images provide visual information on what other programs are available to watch.

If you have this page displayed, you can merely scroll to the thumbnail of the channel you want to watch rather than typing the channel on your remote control keypad.

Shown on this page is a look at the Samsung Apps Menu and Apps Store.

This menu provides a central location for accessing and organizing all your internet apps.

The top photo shows the Apps that you have currently available. You can organize your icons so that your favorites are displayed on this page and others are displayed on a second page. As you can see, not all of the squares have an App icon.

The bottom photo allows you add more apps to your selection, further filling the empty squares on your Apps Menu. It is important to note that although most of the Apps are free, some require either a small installation fee or a paid subscription to content on a continuing basis.
