Samsung UN46F8000 LED/LCD TV - USB Inputs - Digital/Analog Audio Outputs

Here is a look at the connections located on the rear of the Sasmung UN46F8000 that are positioned vertically and facing the right side of the TV (if viewing the TV from the front, screen side).

Starting at the top and moving down, the first three connections are USB inputs. These are used for accessing audio, video, and still image files on USB flash drives, as well as allowing the connection of a USB Windows Keyboard.

Continuing to move down is a Digital Optical audio output for connection of the TV to an external audio systme. Many HDTV programs contain Dolby Digital soundtracks than can take advantage of this connection.

Just below the Digital Optical output is an additional analog two-channel stereo output (adapter cable provided) can be used as an alternate option to connect the TV to an external audio system that may not have a digital optical input.

Continuing to move down is a Samsung EX-Link connection. Ex-Link is an RS232 compatible data port that allows control commands between the TV and other compatible devices - such as PC.

Finally, on the bottom is the HDMI 4 connection, which is also MHL-enabled.

For a look at, and further explanation of the connections running horizontally, and facing down, on the rear panel of the Samsung UN46F8000, proceed to the next photo....

Samsung UN46F8000 LED/LCD Smart TV - Photo - HDMI and AV Connections

Samsung UN46F8000 LED/LCD Smart TV - Photo - HDMI and AV Connections
Photo of the HDMI and AV connections on the Samsung UN46F8000 LED/LCD TV. Photo © Robert Silva - Licensed to About.com

Here is a look at the connections located on the rear of the Sasmung UN46F8000 that are positioned horizontally and facing down.

Start from the left side of the photo is an IR Out port for connecting the provided IR Extender flasher if desired.

Moving right are three HDMI inputs. These inputs allow the connection of an HDMI or DVI source (such as an HD-Cable or HD-Satellite Box, Upscaling DVD, or Blu-ray Disc Player). Sources with DVI outputs can also be connected to HDMI input 2 via DVI-HDMI adapter cable. It is also important to note the HDMI 3 input is Audio Return Channel (ARC) enabled.

Next is a wired LAN (Ethernet). It is important to note that the UN46F8000 also has built-in Wifi, but if you don't have access to a Wireless router, or your wireless connection is unstable, you can connect an Ethernet cable to the LAN port for connection to a home and the internet.

Progressing further to the right is a set of combined Component (Green, Blue, Red) and Composite Video inputs, along with associated analog stereo audio inputs. It is important to note that these inputs are provided for connecting both a composite and component video source. However, since they share the same audio input, if is not practical connect both at the same time.

However, if you continue to the right, there is an additional composite video input that does have its own set of audio inputs.

Also, one additional thing to note about the component, composite, and analog stereo inputs is that they do not use standard connections - but the required adapter cables are provided as part of the Samsung UN46F8000's accessory package.

Finally, on the far right of the photo is an Ant/Cable RF input connection for receiving over-the-air HDTV or unscrambled digital cable signals.

Here is a look at a unique feature that Samsung includes in several of its higher-end TVs, the Smart Evolution Kit.

Consumers get very frustrated that the TV they buy today may become "obsolete" in just a few short years as new features and processing capabilities are introduced in successive model years.

To help alleviate this concern, Samsung has developed the Smart Evolution Kit.

The interchangeable nature of this device allows consumers to "upgrade" their current TV with new features and capabilities may be included in a newer model, such as faster processing, changes in the menu interface, and updated control features.

However, keep in mind that the Smart Evolution Kit will not add Smart TV features to a non-Smart TV model, or add 3D to a non-3D model, nor will it be able to upgrade a 1080p TV to a 4K UltraHD TV - for those features, you still need a buy an new TV that has them already in place. However, each generation of the Smart Evolution Kit can add selected refinements to already existing Smart TV features.

The exchange out of an old, and installation of a new Smart Evolution Kit can be done by the consumer or an authorized installer. Price will be determined as each successive unit becomes available - which is a lot less than buying a new TV.

Compare Prices for the currently avialable 2012-to-2013 Smart Evolution Kit - Note: The UN46F8000 already comes with the 2013 version installed.

Samsung UN46F8000 LED/LCD Smart TV - Photo - Remote Control

Samsung UN46F8000 LED/LCD Smart TV - Photo - Remote Control
Photo of the remote control provided with the Samsung UN46F8000 LED/LCD TV. Photo © Robert Silva - Licensed to About.com
Here is a close-up look at the Smart Touch remote control provided with the Samsung UN46F8000 TV.

The first thing you notice (besides its relative compact size), is the lack of most buttons.

On the very top of the remote are the Standby Power On/Off Button, Source Selection, and STB (cable/satellite) Power On/Off buttons. In addition, just above the source selection buttons is the built-in voice recognition microphone. This feature, when activated, allows you perform some TV functions, such as changing channels and volume control via voice command. The feature does work, but you need to speak slowly and distincly for the commands to get recognized properly.

Moving down, first (and hidden from view on left side of the remote) is the push-in Mute control. Moving on the visible controls are Volume, Voice activation, More (displays a virtual version of the remote control on your TV screen - shown in more detail later in the next photo), and the Channel up and down buttons.

Next is the Touch Pad, which takes up the center of the remote control. This pad works like a laptop touch pad, and allows you scroll and select through the TV's settings, as well as clicking on onscreen feature and content service icons. If you press and hold the touch pad, you can access the TV station list and navigate to your desired station using the cursor functions.

Moving down to the row immediately below the touchpad are the Light (provide backlight for the remote to make it easier to use in a darkened room), DVR (displays your cable or satellite boxes' EPG - Electronic Program Guide), Menu (access the TV's onscreen menu settings), and 3D (provides direct access to the TV's 3D viewing functions).

Finally, on the bottom of the remote are the Return/Exit button (for getting out of the onscreen menu system), Smart Hub (direct access to the TVs Internet and Network streaming content features), and EPG (displays the TVs Eletronic Program Guide).

In addition to the physical Smart Touch remote control, Samsung also provides a more comprehensive onscreen virtual Remote Control display.

Starting on the left photo, the display provides direct access to Netflix and Amazon Instant Video, as well as TV operating status and various tools and video/audio setting options. You can also access the online version of the user guide by clicking on the "e-Manual" icon.

The center photo provides access to a virtual keypad for direct access of TV channels.

Finally, the right side photo provides access to the A (RED),B (Green),C (Yellow),D (Blue) buttons that provide access to special functions associated with some Blu-ray discs, as well as other designated features on the TV or other connected devices. Next are the playback and recording transport controls for the built-in media player functions, as well as other compatible devices. The bottom row duplicates some of the functions displayed on the first page of the virtual remote, as well as the physical touch pad remote.
