RockXP v4.0

A Full Review of RockXP, a Free Key Finder Tool

RockXP is a small, easy to use, and completely free key finder program. Since it's entirely portable, you don't have to install it to your computer, meaning you can even store and run it directly from a flash drive.

RockXP has no trouble finding the product key for your Windows installation or for any of your other Microsoft programs like Microsoft Office, but that's not all it can do. This key finder utility can also generate passwords and find passwords to various accounts stored on your computer.

Aside from the fact that many antivirus programs mistakenly identify RockXP as malware, it can be an extremely useful tool when you've lost that super-important product key!

This review is of RockXP v4.0. It's a beta version and hasn't been updated in a long time, but if a new version happens to be released, please let me know so I can update this review.

My Thoughts on RockXP

Among the free product key finder programs available, RockXP is a pretty decent choice. The download is small, there's no permanent installation required, and it's completely free. This not only means that it's easy and quick to use but that no other potentially unwanted software programs are installed along with RockXP. That's hard to beat.

In my tests of version 4.0, RockXP correctly identified the product keys for Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2007. RockXP might also find the product key or CD key for other programs that encrypt keys in the Windows Registry.

The activation backup feature lets you back up activation related files to make it easier to reactive Windows after a reinstall. To restore them, you have to boot into Safe Mode and copy the wpa.dbl and wpabaln.exe files (which RockXP backed up) to the C:\Windows\System32\ and C:\Windows\System32\dllcache\ folders.

A password generator feature is also packaged with RockXP, which can make short and long (up to 200 characters) passwords that contain both letters and numbers. While this isn't directly related to finding lost product keys, it is a handy feature you may find useful. You can also easily change the Windows XP product key, though there are few legitimate uses for this feature.

The only problem I had with RockXP was the fact that my antivirus program identified it as malware. The developer acknowledges this issue and attributes it to the way in which the program identifies product keys. I would advise you to make your own judgment here as far as using RockXP, but I have yet to have a problem myself nor hear of anyone else experiencing issues due to RockXP.

Though not necessarily a problem more than just a lack of features is the fact that RockXP can not find product keys for the newer versions of Windows like lots of other key finder programs can. However, since the software hasn't been updated in quite some time, I suspect that support for newer versions of Windows and MS Office will never come around.

RockXP is completely free and easy to use, though, and finds product keys fast. I recommend giving it a shot if you need to locate yours!

If you're not having luck with RockXP to find the right key, try another free key finder program like Winkeyfinder or LicenseCrawler, or maybe even a premium key finder tool.
