How to Restore or Import Outlook Express Address Book Data

Outlook Express was discontinued in 2007. It had been integrated into Internet Explorer and later included in Windows 2000, Windows Me, and Windows XP. The last version was Outlook Express 6.

It was replaced with the Windows Mail application and the Windows Live Mail applications for PC. For macOS, it was replaced with Apple Mail and Microsoft Outlook, sold as part of Microsoft Office for Macintosh.

Outlook Express is different from Microsoft Outlook and The instructions below are relevant to any system that is still running Microsoft Express.

Migration Procedure

If you have a  backup copy of your important Outlook Express address book data, you can restore your contacts from that file in Outlook Express if you still have the OE application on your PC.

To restore or import Outlook Express contacts from a backup copy:

  • Select Tools | Address Book... from the menu in Outlook Express.
  • Now select File | Import | Address Book (WAB)... from the address-book menu.
  • Select the backup copy of your Outlook Express address book.
  • Click Open.
  • Click OK.

If you originally saved your backup file as a comma-separated-values export, you'll be able to import it into other, more modern contact applications, although you may need to adjust the names of column headers to match your specific application's requirements.
