The good news is, if you know how to reset your Fitbit Alta, you can resolve most issues and won't lose your data. Here's how to do it. These instructions apply to the Fitbit Alta and Fitbit Alta HR. For other models, see our piece on how to reset Fitbit activity trackers. The Difference Between a Restart and a Factory Reset Resetting/restarting a Fitbit Alta is not the same as doing a factory reset. A factory reset will remove apps, stored data, personal information, and credit/debit cards (for Fitbit Pay-enabled devices). Factory resetting is only available on the following models of Fitbit: Ace 2 and Inspire Series, Aria 2, Charge 3, Ionic and Versa Series, and Flyer. However, you can still erase the data on your Fitbit Alta or Alta HR (see as 'How to Erase the Data on Your Fitbit Alta or Alta HR' below). You can't do a factory reset on a Fitbit Alta to erase the data. The data is automatically erased when the device is paired to a new account, or when you remove the device from your account. Why Reset a Fitbit Alta or Alta HR? Like rebooting your laptop or PC, restarting your Fitbit Alta can help resolve many common troubleshooting issues without any loss of data. Resetting a Fitbit Alta is quick and easy to do, and will help to fix the following issues: It's not syncingIt's not responding to your button presses, taps, or swipesIt's charged up, but won't turn onIt's not tracking your steps or other stats How to Reset a Fitbit Alta or Alta HR Activity Tracker Resetting your Fitbit Alta only takes a few seconds. All you need is your charging cable and Fitbit Alta to do it. To get started, pull out your Fitbit Alta charging cable. Plug the charging cable into a USB port on your laptop or any UL-certified USB wall charger. Next, securely attach your Fitbit to the charging cable. When properly attached, it will vibrate. Once your Fitbit is attached to the charging cable, look for the small round button on the base of the charging cable. Fitbit Press the small round button on the base of the charging cable three times within the span of a few seconds. After the third press, you will see the Fitbit logo appear and the Fitbit will restart. Your Fitbit should now be working normally. If it isn't, contact Fitbit Customer Support. How to Erase the Data on Your Fitbit Alta or Alta HR There may be times you want to fully erase the data on your Fitbit Alta tracker—for example, before you sell it or give it away. With the Fitbit Alta, there is no factory reset option. Instead, your data is automatically erased when it's paired to a new account. Alternatively, you can erase your tracking data by removing the device from your account. How to Remove Your Fitbit Alta or Alta HR from Your Account Removing your Fitbit Alta from your account will erase your tracking history. To preserve this data, be sure to do a Data Export before or after removing your device! Go to the Fitbit website, and log into your account. From the Fitbit dashboard, click the gear icon in the top right corner and select the name of the device you want to remove, e.g., Alta Tracker. At the bottom of the page, click Remove this Alta from your account. If you want to save your data, be sure to do a Data Export from your Dashboard menu before or after you remove the device. Fitbit will send you an email with instructions on how to complete the data export.
